I would say this is already solved. You can wrap the code inside your async void with try/catch or use that FireAndForget extension. You can find a lot of them on github. But if it's fire and forget why care about logging the exception?
If you don't await the task, it wouldn't throw

Your FireAndForget extension method works, albeit the nested try/catch block is bit overkill.

Well.. I have two, a DS1812+ (20TB) and a DS1815+(96TB). These are those old «8 discs in a row» things. The only issue is the power light on the 1812 is dead.
