California is investing $70 million for wildfire prevention and resilience projects across the state to protect communities.

In California, wildfire season and our readiness are year-round, even as Trump makes reckless cuts to wildfire preparedness projects across our state.

New research out of the western U.S. suggests dams and ponds built by beavers can slow floods, store water and even create green firebreaks in wildfire-prone landscapes.

Got inspired by seeing the framed portraits of Jesse, Trench and Darling from photos of Firebreaks hand on display that I decided to put together my own mini ones! ✨️ #ControlRemedy

'The findings add weight to a growing body of evidence that beavers may be acting as ecosystem engineers, reshaping waterways in ways that benefit not just their own survival, but that of entire landscapes.'

Russian refineries are stacking shipping containers around fuel tanks as makeshift blast walls and firebreaks, Dnipro Osint reports. Along with anti-drone nets and metal cages, the defenses complicate drone strikes, though past hits show they do not guarantee safety.

those are like controlled burns to create firebreaks, they are eminently forgivable

This summer has made it abundantly clear that we need rewetting across all landscapes, varied habitats, firebreaks and a recalibration of what we use water for, and in ireland, a massive growth and restoration of our degraded ecosystems like bog and wet woodlands that are naturally fire resistant

Those banking restrictions put in place after the last bank crises were genuinely powerful firebreaks. Getting rid of them is the financial equivalent of pulling vaccines.

There are no good reasons other than firebreaks and emergencies for burning land in the UK. This is not California. Burning here destroys ecosystems, torches wildlife, releases carbon and creates plumes of smoke with serious impacts on human health. Just stop already.

Unironically believe that linguistic diversity is as central to the global immune system as biodiversity: it's important to have firebreaks between different meme pools
i really do believe that at some point the non-American Anglo nations are going to end up requiring the equivalent of CanCon restrictions on algorithmic feeds, if only to prevent American brainworms from going global

4. While the ecosystem recovers, fire risk can be managed with firebreaks and other measures. The gorse shelters young trees as they grow, allowing rainforest to return. But by keeping the ecosystem in its early successional stages, through repeated burning, the swalers *make it fire-prone*.

To MAGA screeching about raking the brush from the hillsides in California:

1) That would cause landslides and mudslides

2) That would increase fire intensity

3) You'd lose firebreaks

4) Flash flooding would occur in lower areas

5) Less water would be stored in the ground for gradual release

Beavers are so absurd and they just become more absurd the more you read about them. Like what do you mean beaver ponds can serve as firebreaks? The largest beaver dam is over 2500 feet long?!?! They have a cloaca????????

Not now, Patrick there are real issues to discuss!

Firebreaks, for instance.

By re-wetting peatlands, bringing back beaver-engineered wetlands, and supporting natural grazing, we create living firebreaks that protect our communities from climate extremes. 🧵(3/4)

The lyrebird scratches up insects & grubs from the leaf mold to eat with powerful legs.

A single bird can move 350 tons of dirt in a year, creating firebreaks and increasing the rate of decomposition of leaf litter into new soil.

So they play an important role in local ecology & nutrient cycling.
