First bird of my day: a very noisy chirruping coming from the conifers, then a female house sparrow popped out and flew off at speed to a hedge down the road, as if she'd had enough of all the bickering. #FirstBird#OfMyDay

A blackbird singing early, was this the one so perfect in it's blackness and vivid yellow beak that watched me as it carefully drank from the tray late yesterday? On the way to the station a crow flew off with a pot of barbeque sauce, maybe to go with the kebab further along the street? #FirstBird

Didn't get a photo, so I did a quick sketch of my #FirstBird yesterday--a very saucy white-breasted nuthatch!

#birds
A simple, colored pencil sketch of a white-breasted nuthatch on a pine branch, facing our left with its beak tilted up. I especially liked how the slaty blue grey of its back and wings turned out. It's about a 3 inch sketch and there's a bit of washi tape at bottom right showing a pine tree in snowfall.

Happy New Year! Here is my #FirstBird of 2026, a dark-eyed junco in this morning’s flurries with a snowflake on its beak. As it’s a new world #sparrow it fits today’s #BirdOfTheDay alt theme. If not for that pink beak it would qualify for #B&W ! #birds #juncos #nature #birdphotography #happynewyear
A mostly-grey dark-eyed junco sits in a pile of snow with its white breast blending in during snow flurries. It’s facing slightly left but has its head turned to look right. Its pink beak has a snowflake on the tip. Photo taken Jan. 1 2026 in Walpole MA USA

#firstbird of 2025 was a black-billed magpie, followed by a northern flicker, Canada geese, bald eagle and a northern shrike. Not bad for a Lethbridge morning with -20C windchill.
#birds 🪶
A not so great photo of an adult bald eagle flying across a grey, overcast sky. A gaggle of Canada geese on ice along a river, some of them standing, some of them sitting down with their beaks tucked into their back and wing feathers.

OK well, first bird of 2026 was *probably* a house sparrow, but there was enough glare for plausible deniability, and the *second* bird was definitely a song sparrow so maybe I’m counting that. #birds #firstbird #birding

I looked for #FirstBird today but couldn't find it. Mine was a female blackbird dashing over the garden fence.
