Beyond the Network: Supporting Those Who Answer the Call
Every day, first responders answer the call—often without knowing what they will face. They care for our communities during moments that demand courage, compassion, and extraordinary commitment. On National First Responders Day, we honor that service and reaffirm our responsibility to support the people behind the mission—not only with the technology they rely on, but in meaningful ways beyond the network. When we first partnered with the federal government to deliver FirstNet®, Built with AT&T nearly ten years ago, the vision was bigger than building America’s public safety network. It was to work with public safety, listen to their needs, and be a trusted partner to the people and agencies we serve.

I don’t like to link back to Xitter but this thread is worth sharing. Europe is in the process of creating a FirstNet like network for first responders and #$ASTS / Satellite Connect Europe is likely to be a core component of the plan. x.com/cytoplasmica...

Last week, the EU announced plans for the European version of FirstNet, called the European Union Critical communication systems (EUCCS). It is a secure 5G, voice, video, data, and Direct-to-device broadband network for 5M+ first responders across 31 EU/Schengen countries. A number of signs sugges…

This is the direct ancestor to the modern Fusion Centers and FirstNet—where the boundaries between corporate data logistics, local law enforcement, and federal intelligence are entirely dissolved.
October 13, 2026 at 6:28 AM
For example, AT&T operates FirstNet Fusion, a centralized, nationwide platform that merges surveillance, real-time video, and data routing across thousands of public safety and emergency agencies.

The State-Corporate Symbiosis: Room 641A to FirstNet
The fusion of private telecommunications and state surveillance has highly documented physical manifestations. The seamless pipeline between AT&T and the state did not end with WWI nationalization.

Their only major MNO partner in Europe is DT. Can’t see that lasting long. Without Europe any D2D constellation will be challenged to earn good returns. All the better for AST to power a European FirstNet plus defense dual purpose capability.

For years I have been following the FCZc rule making process for the 50 MHz of public safety spectrum at 4.9Ghz. Looks like the FCC is moving forward to select a band manager to deal with interference coordination and negotiate an agreement with FirstNet. urgentcomm.com/regulations/...

Despite the statute's lofty goals, FirstNet is still not truly interoperable. This is Congress' opportunity to fix that, says @haroldfeld.bsky.social in his latest blog post:
Finishing the FirstNet Job – Making the Interoperable Network the 9/11 Commission Wanted
Congress created FirstNet in the wake of 9/11 to launch a universal broadband network for first responders — but the work remains unfinished.

In the wake of 9/11, Congress passed the FirstNet Authority statute with the goal of creating a nationwide broadband network, so that first responders could communicate with each other at any place, no matter what network they used. Now, that authority is set to expire.

This post originally included FirstNet as a network with Watch Duty capability via satellite data. FirstNet satellite capability is still in limited testing, and Watch Duty functionality will be in place as FirstNet satellite data access becomes fully available.

This would be in addition to FirsNet, not instead of. And it would leave the FirstNet core and spectrum untouched.
As Congress reauthorizes FirstNet, it should require true device interoperability for 2026, not 2001.

Today, as a result, we have FirstNet, which is sorta kinda interoperable like my email was in 2001. But in 2026, we can do better. That's why @publicknowledge.bsky.social
has asked Congress to make FirstNet support devices that work across multiple networks.
