#FirthOfThames
The #FirthOfThames also has very high levels of #acidification caused by #FarmRunoff - with pH levels lower than 7.9 in autumn - not expected in the open ocean until 2100. Upwelling on the US west coast - seriously affecting oyster hatcheries sees water reach 7.6 pH levels.

Part of the emissions release is from nitrogen - high in the #FirthOfThames from #FarmRunoff, which causes algae blooms in autumn. Bacteria, breaking the algae down as they die, release carbon dioxide & suck oxygen out of surrounding seawater killing other marine life

Important findings! A healthy ecosystem - in the marine environment (or on land) holds onto carbon. Marine areas with high #AgriculturalRunOff like #FirthOfThames release emissions, as do damaged/silt smothered harbour floors/seabeds

Seagrass meadows, mangroves and kelp forests are carbon sinks. Restoring or protecting them addresses both biodiversity loss and the climate crisis.
NZ hopes to store carbon in marine ecosystems – but some are so degraded they’re already a source of emissions
