It was however, sad to see so many diseased or damaged fish in the Cut-Off Channel at Wretton. I observed Roach, Rudd, Bleak and Bitterlings all suffering from one thing or another.

In the lower River Little Ouse I saw this Common Roach (Rutilus rutilus) with a white thing on its lip. I can't tell whether it is perhaps a torn flap of skin after being caught and released by an angler, or some kind of growth or parasite. #fish #fishdisease #teamfish #fishsky #rivers 15/25

Some more Common Dace (Leuciscus leuciscus) in the River Little Ouse, including a small one with a rather horrifically deformed eye - the eye on the other side was fine. I wonder what could cause this? #fishdisease

These invertebrate feeders are built for the fast lane compared to Chub.

Contagious Cancer in Fish Identified as Fourth Known Transmissible Cancer in Animals
Researchers in Vermont have identified a contagious form of cancer affecting brown bullhead catfish in Lake Memphremagog, marking the first known case of a transmissible cancer in fish and the fourth overall in animals. The study, published in Nature, found that melanoma tumors from affected catfish share unique genetic variants not present in their hosts, indicating the cancer spreads like an infectious disease. This discovery challenges the rarity of transmissible cancers, which are typically unexpected in nature. The cancer's spread across New England lakes, despite no major pollution sources, suggests it may have evolved into a parasite-like entity. Scientists remain puzzled about transmission methods, potential environmental factors like arsenic exposure, and the cancer's impact on catfish populations. While not a threat to humans, the findings highlight the need for further research into how cancers evade immune systems and the broader implications for cancer biology.

Small Roach were much the most abundant fish in the Cut-Off Channel west of the bridge at Wretton, then Bitterling & Bleak.
There was an awful lot of diseased roach & bleak. The one with the bad head was hiding on its own under the roots by the bank.

High density of Roach in the River Lark at Mildenhall (max fish in one pic is 11) where people feed the waterfowl - but many diseased fish (several pike are also damaged). Fin rot?

Haven't seen anywhere else the diseases suffered by the fish in Lee Brook at its confluence with River Lark; especially Roach and Minnow fry were affected. Also saw Chub, Rudd & Gudgeon fry in the mixed shoals.

5/9 The suspect? Viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS), which Jennifer Powell, a University of Toronto PhD candidate, describes as "a really nasty fish disease" capable of wiping out huge numbers of fish.
