It was further compounded by news Monday that Findlay had appointed Reann Gasper as her new deputy chief of staff—one day after the Abbotsford-Mission MLA agreed to resign her seat so Findlay could run there in a byelection. The Canadian Criminal Code forbids selling an appointment or resignation from elected office in exchange for a reward or profit. Paton, who quit as a BC Conservative MLA on Monday, said he was made the offer in the lead-up to a July 2-3 caucus retreat in Penticton. “The chief of staff, Chris Delaney, phoned me twice, we talked on the phone and up in Penticton about me stepping down,” Paton said in an interview. “And he said, if you step down we’ll give you a staff role for two years as agriculture advisor for the party and pay you the same amount you’re getting if you’re an MLA.” B.C. MLAs make $122,043 annually. Paton refused to quit. He’s one of three MLAs who rejected giving up their seat so Findlay could run in a byelection.
