My pitcher plants are all starting to flower. Generally I'd cut these buds off as flowering takes a lot of energy and I'd prefer they got busy growing new leaves instead, but I might leave this one to do its thing 🌱

Yuccas amaze me. They’ll sit for two or three years just being their beautiful yellow green selves and then, seemingly out of nowhere, they’ll throw up a 4 foot flowerspike with beautiful white flowers and incredible fragrance like “Hello. Here we are“. 🙂

a close-up pic of a flowerspike at the top of green stem. there are around half a dozen tightly stacked whorls of mint-type flowers in this spike, but mostly they have only empty calyces; only a handful of corollas are present. the calyces are green and bilabiate, with three wide triangular teeth on their upper lip and two narrow triangular teeth on their lower lip. of the flowers with corollas, one is in the center facing forward, a couple are off on the side facing to the left, and some are hiding on the other side of the flowerspike. each corolla has a short tubular base that rises out of its calyx slightly before splitting into two lips. the lower lip is white and has three hanging lobes: two smaller later lobes and a larger middle lobe with a frilly edge. the upper lip is light purple and has just a single lobe and forms a hood over the rest of the flower. it has a small ridgeline along the middle of the top lile the crest of a helmet. underneath the hood there are four stamens with little dangling anthers. a bug is crawling around by the bottom of the flowerspike. a somewhat further-back photo of a terminal flowerspike at the top of a green stem with long, lance-shaped opposite leaves. the spike has a pair of leaflike bracts at its base, as well as shorter & broader leaflike bracts between the whorls of flowers in the spike. the flowers have bilabiate green calyces with three wide triangular lobes on their upper lip and two narrow triangular lobes on their bottom lip. only a few flowers presently have corollas. the corollas are also bilabiate, with white, 3-lobed bottom lips and a light purple, hood-like upper lip. a patch of self-heal by the side of a dirt path. they have unbranching main stems with opposite green leaves, long and lance-shaped. the tallest of them doesn't come halfway to knee-high. at the top of each stem there is a green flowerspike, none of which have more than a few blooming flowers with corollas present. those that are present are light purple and white.

The gladiolus flowers are developing beautifully. I expect the purple ones to be out in another day or two, and now we’re seeing peeks of red as well!

a close-up photo showing a small segment of two spikes of tiny blooming orchid flowers. on each flowerspike the little white flowers form a single-file spiral running up the stalk; the dozen or so flowers in this photo face all directions around the stalk. each flower has three white sepals and three white petals. one sepal on the top of the flower covers the gap between two upper petals, together forming a hood-like covering over the mouth of the flower; all three turn up together at the tip. the bottom petal is larger than the upper two and complements the upper hood structure to form a tube. towards the tip, the bottom petal turns down and develops a frilly margin. two lateral sepals are held mostly forward but spreading slightly, one on each side of the tube formed by the other sepal & petals. each flower had a slight downward cast & has a green bract at its base. a little ladies'-tresses flowerspike from the lowest flower to the top. low on the stalk the flowers have faded, petals and sepals wilting and turning brown while the green ovary at the base swells. the flowers spiral up the stalk counterclockwise in a single file. the upper quarter of the spike is in bloom, pure white sepals and petals arranged into a gaping tube flanked by outstretched arms. two little ladies'-tresses growing on forest hillside among sedge and moss, illuminated in a fleck of light filtered through out-of-sight trees overhead. their leafless, slender green stalks terminate in spikes of tiny, spiraling, white flowering that glow in the bright sunlight. several of the miniscule flowers could fit on your fingertip.

a close-up of one blooming flower and several nearby buds on a spike of flowers, the stem of which is just below the frame of the picture. the buds are long and narrow, with five rounded sides, coming to a blunt tip; they are scarlet red. the blooming flower's corolla is also scarlet on the outside, but its five narrow, triangular lobes have spread, revealing the inside to be bright yellow-green. a tall, light green style poking far out of the mouth of the flower is dusted with yellow pollen courtesy of five stamens at its base, which lean in from the outside of the corolla like flying buttresses. the stamens have red filaments that blanch at the tip where they support bright yellow anthers. a spotted cucumber beetle is chilling head-down on the side of the flower; it's shell is light orange with black spots. a photo from further back, of a terminal flowerspike of tall, narrow, scarlet flowers and buds (with most of the lower flowers faded, leaving only a few at the top). one flower is blooming, and a orange beetle with black spots is holding on to its side just beneath one of the narrow, triangular, spreading lobes. the outside of the flower is red, but the inside is yellow-green. five stamens with bright yellow anthers press against a tall green style in the center. below the flowerspike there are two glossy smooth dark green leaves, opposite and sessile. the branching veins that run through the leaves leave deep creases in their surfaces. a clump of woodland pinkroots growing at the base of a steep bluff along a creek up in the hills. recent storms have knocked trees down into the creek hollow, opening up the slope to an unusual plenty of sunlight. these herbs are over waist high, unbranching stems bearing large, glossy green, opposite leaves either sessile or on very short leafstems. the stems terminate in spikes of trumpet-shaped flowers whose outsides are scarlet. they have five lobes that, speading wide apart into a star-shape, reveal bright yellow-green inner surfaces.

a flowerspike of over two dozen tiny white and green orchid flowers arranged in a dense single file, spiraling counterclockwise up a slender green stem, making three full turns. each flower has a green base which houses the ovary, a white floral tube composed of three petals and one sepal, and two white lateral sepals. inside the mouth of the tube, there is a patch of green on the bottom petal. the tip of the bottom petal hangs down & is ruffled along its edges. above, the two top petals and top sepal turn upward a little at the tip. a close-up of a short length of a ladies'-tresses flowerspike with nearly a dozen visible orchid flowers, mostly facing to one side or the other; just one flower facing forwards. each flower has a green base, three sepals, and three petals. two petals and one overlapping sepal (all white) on the top of the flower form a not-quite-halfpipe hood over the bottom petal, and turn up slightly at the tip. the large bottom petal forms the bottom half of a floral tube, complementing the petals and sepal above. it is mostly white, especially around the edges, but green in the middle, inside the tube. where visible on flowers facing to the side, the outer surface of the bottom petal is also green. towards the front, the bottom petal curves down and has a frilly margin. two thin, white lateral sepals flank the tube & are held mostly forward but sometimes spreading outwards or down a little. a southern slender ladies'-tresses orchid growing in knee-high grass in a little prairie patch with a treeline in the near distance. the orchid is about the same height as the grass. its flowering stalk is leafless, and the rosette of leaves that once grew at its base has wilted away. the upper third of the smooth green stalk is a spiraling spike of tiny white and green flowers, a single helix that makes two turns around its axis before the blooming flowers give way to flowerbuds.

Each year, I think about tossing out this bromeliad. For much of the year, it’s ugly & blah. Then, December comes & the bright fuschia flowerspike appears, followed by these colorful but short-lived flowers & I keep the plants for another year. #gardening

a flowerspike of tiny white orchid flowers at the top of a green stalk, seen from the side. the flowers are arranged in three columns which twist gently as a triple helix, most pronounced at the top of the spike where none of the flowers are open. one column is out of sight on the far side of the spike; one is mostly facing to the right; and the third is mostly facing forward, slightly to the left. each flower has a leafy bract at its base, cupping the hairy green ovary. the sepals and petals collectively form an apparently bilabial tube-shaped structure lying horizontal. two upper petals with a sepal resting on top across both petals for the 'upper lip' which rises slightly at the tip, while the third petal alone forms the 'bottom lip' which curves down sharply at its tip. the two remaining sepals are held out to the sides where they spread apart slightly. another angle, a little closer in, which better reveals the spiraling character of the three columns of tiny white orchid flowers. the flowers low on the spike are open, while those above are closed & may not ever open; this variety is capable of self-pollination. this perspective also gives a glimpse down the throat of some of the flowers, where there is a mild greenish tinge. some of the reproductive organs are tucked away in there but nothing can be seen distinctly. an oval ladies'-tresses growing on the floor of a deciduous hardwood forest, surrounded by the green leaves of violets. its thin green stalk rises from a bed of leaf litter & terminates below knee-height with a spike of tiny white orchid flowers arranged in a triple helix. there is one leaf growing at its base, smooth & shiny green, with entire margins, lance-shaped; a couple similar, though progressively smaller leaves grow at intervals higher on its stalk.

a close-up look at a prairie-clover flowerspike, a cylinder about as long as the last knuckle or two of a little finger and a bit narrower. the densely packed flowers start blooming at the bottom; the lowest rows of flowers have already faded. the most recent ring of blooms is a little over halfway up the spike, though this is misleading because the spike will elongate as the blooms progress. the flowers have five vividly bright magenta petals. they are legume-type in structure, but the petals are mostly all pretty similar and they're difficult to distinguish. the stamens have magenta filaments with yellow anthers that turn brown with age. above the flowers, the silvery hairs of the calyces of flowerbuds are punctuated by long, thin, brown bracts that are also silvery due to their own minute hairs. three stems of prairie-clover spreading mostly horizontally just above gravel and dirt in a limestone cedar glade. the thin red stems bear multifoliate leaves with 3-9 linear green leaflets with margins that roll in slightly. at the tip of the stems there are long, cylindrical spikes of bright magenta flowers, with blooms working their way up from the bottom of the spikes. a patch of gattinger's prairie-clover spreading across dirt and gravel in a limestone cedar glade. the stems lay prostrate across the ground, ascending slightly. the red stems are lined with alternate, multifoliate leaves; the leaves are composed of 3, 5, 7, or 9 linear green leaflets. the stems tilt upwards at their tips, where they terminate in cylindrical spikes of tiny magenta flowers. the portions of the flowerspikes that have yet to bloom are silvery gray on account of the hairs that cover the flowers' calyces.

this photo focuses on a freshly blooming eastern agave flower. it has six long yellow-green tepals that are fused into a tube for most their length, then split into narrow lobes that taper to acute points without spreading. six stamens emerge from the mouth of the flower; they have linear, cream-colored anthers with tiny red speckles, held from their midpoint by stout green filaments likewise speckled with tiny red dots. at the base of the flower there is a tiny bract just below where the flower meets the waxy green flowerstalk. the top of a tall, waxy green flowerspike with about a dozen and a half flowers and buds, with blooms starting at the bottom and working their way up. only the bottom three flowers have opened; the rest are still buds. the third from the bottom is the same as in the previous photo: six stamens with cream anthers speckled red held by thick green filaments also speckled red, emerging from six long, claw-like yellow-green tepals. the lower two flowers are older. they have dropped their anthers, leaving only the stamen filaments behind. in addition, a style has emerged, not quite as long as the stamen filaments, tipped by a stigma with three white lobes. an eastern agave growing from between several gray fieldstones that were likely piled up decades ago when someone may have tried to use this limestone cedar glade as pasture or something like that. the plain is dominated by moderately short grass and forbs, such as this eastern agave and some brown-eyed susans blooming with pretty yellow and brown flowers in the background. the agave has several arching, strap-like leaves in a rosette at its base, and a tall leafless flowering stalk coming up to nearly head high. the top of the waxy green stalk is a flowerspike with around a dozen and a half flowers, most of which are still buds. only a few flowers lowest on the spike have bloomed. the flowers have yellow-green tepals fused into a tube from which large stamens emerge; only after the anthers (present on the flower third from the bottom) have wilted do they send out a 3-lobed style as seen on the lowest two flowers.

The flowerspike, which grows in the second or third year of the plant’s life, can be 4m tall and produce 200,000 seeds. The plant then dies.

’pininana’ means ‘small pine’ but of course it isn’t a conifer. It is, in fact, in the same genus as the notorious weed Paterson’s Curse, Echium plantagineum, and many other plants, but this one apparently decided that the path to success was investing everything in the flowerspike.
