A white fogbow has formed over Laguna Lake Open Space in San Luis Obispo. A fog bow is like a rainbow, but because the water droplets are so fine, they are not able to form the prism colors seen in rainbows. They occur when there is light fog in the morning and the sun is low. You will see them when your back is to the sun, hence my shadow in the center under the fogbow. The field is long, dry, brown grasses, and faint hills can be seen beyond the fogbow. The sky is blue above the fogbow.

Photo taken from Cerro San Luis mountain of a huge fogbow stretching across the wide area of Los Osos Valley and San Luis Obispo. The hills are green, the sky mostly blue except for the light fog and a few clouds. The bow starts in Los Osos and ends at a cloud sitting on top of Bishop Peak. To the far right is San Luis Obispo. A fogbow is white because it's formed from light hitting the small water droplets of fog. Since the droplets are so small, the prism effect doesn't occur as it does in rainbows formed from larger rain drops. Fogbows appear when the sun is at a lower angle and the fog is dissipating.

A white fogbow is forming over a dark, grassy field. It has a gap in the center where the fogbow disappears to blue sky. There is thicker fog underneath the fogbow. Laguna Lake Park Open Space, San Luis Obisipo, California Fogbows are like rainbows where the sun is shining through water, but fog droplets are much smaller, so they don't create the prism of colors. Instead you are left with a white arc. A white fogbow is forming over a dark, grassy field. The gap in the center is filling in, almost creating a complete arc. There is thicker fog underneath the fogbow. Laguna Lake Park Open Space, San Luis Obisipo, California Fogbows are like rainbows where the sun is shining through water, but fog droplets are much smaller, so they don't create the prism of colors. Instead you are left with a white arc. The arc is now complete. My shadow is on the field and under the arc. The sky is blue above, and the fog appears thinner under the arc.

My first encounter with a fogbow was a spectacular one, and the largest I have seen. They are common here, but usually much smaller. The fogbow stretches from Los Osos to San Luis Obispo (Bishop Peak).

My shadow is front and center at the bottom of the frame. I am taking a photo of a fogbow that is in the distance, across a large field of brown, dry grass and vegetation. The sky is blue above, then the white fogbow which forms from a thin layer of fog. Fogbows are white because the water particles are so fine that they do not have the prism effect of larger drops in rainbows. They only show up when your back is to the sun at a low angle and thinning fog. This is in Laguna Lake Open Space in San Luis Obispo, California
