Memo to my history colleagues: when the plugs are pulled & websites/blogs/e-newspapers/Internet Archive go dark what's left for our successors? Tech has inadvertently created is a new genre, one based on fragile data not words. I suggest boning up on folkloristics to anticipate how to save it all. 🗃️

My big piece of advice here is to get to know folklorists and read their books. Also, understanding how folklore works, taxonomy - basic folkloristics, will help discern the wheat from the chaff
Search results for folklore are being stuffed with AI content farms. It's depressing.

This seems new. Does anyone know anything more about the Forensic Folklore Institute? The idea is using applied folkloristics on crime forensicfolklore.org

Question: Would you participate in a Discord community at the intersections of folklore and storytelling if I ran it? This would be a curated group for professional artists and storytellers to discuss the ways their work employs traditional belief, narrative, etc. #folklore #folkloristics

I have a book review in this issue of the Journal of American Folklore for "Stories of the Past: Viewing History Through Fiction." #AcademicSky, #Folkloristics

1: history/histories of C20 British folkloristics
2: bad popular cultural takes on/representations of folkloristics tell us more about (1) than many histories. (tbf, I have done some work on this, but it's more of a preoccupation than a study).
Bluesky academics, let's get to know each other! Quote this & tell me: 1) a project you are working on & 2) an odd idea/theory you aren't working on but keep thinking about.
Here's mine:
- Whether we can have statehood without inhabitable land.
- The legal-philosophical symbolism in Wagner's Ring.

I made this pattern & embroidered it on a pillowcase because I am annoyed with people not knowing the Two Wolves story is fakelore.

Til slutt: at offentlige figurer som lever av å snakke ikke sjekker kildene sine bedre har irritert meg såpass at jeg lagde mitt eget To Ulver-mem. Og broderte det på et putetrekk. Takk til bl.a. Fux for å ha overbevist meg om at brodering er Bra og Zen. /the end.

When I visited Mizuki Shigeru Road two years ago, was surprised at the amount of overlap between his comics and what some anglophone works of folkloristics consider to be authentic premodern Japanese tradition.

I wonder how much ultimately is pure fiction, whether from the Shōwa or the Edo period.

I'm probably going to talk a bit more about folkloristics and folklore on this account, essentially blending my two Twitter accounts

For those who don’t know, my field is Hebrew Bible & ancient Near Eastern religion. My undergrad degree was in myth study & folkloristics, & my doctoral work will likely be in comparative myth & liturgy.
I got into my second-choice PhD program!!!!!!! Religious Studies.

I’m going to wait until I hear from my first choice, but no matter what, I’m doing my PhD!!!!! I get to start over doing what I love. It wasn’t a pipe dream! Someone thinks I’m qualified to do this! I’m in tears.

There’s an interesting folkloristics paper to be written about the legend of Hans Asperger’s life, & how it’s developed in online ND spaces. #Autistic #Neurodiversity

My academic trajectory was a bit all over the place. My B.A. was English lit(major) & folkloristics (minor). My masters was in medieval lit and languages, so my PhD tried to mix all that: what happens in terms of txt/genre/value when oral txts are written down.

“Faxlore” is even its own subcategory within folkloristics. A lot of folks within a few years of my age may remember childhood warnings about “blue star acid” or “Mickey Mouse acid,” which was a prominent example of faxlore urban legend / misinformation
There was a time when people shared “click bait”-type misinformation… by fax (and before that, by photocopier)

The social, psychological, and storytelling dynamics were similar; the distribution speed was different

(4/5) In my spare time, I read bit of philosophy; political philosophy, natural philosophy, environmental ethics... And also a bit on mythology, folkloristics, and comparative religion, mostly on Buddhism, the Sanskrit epics (as well as their adaptations by SEAsians), and magical healing practices..

It is inevitable that my folkloristics training will seep into any creative project I do, even when I'm trying to create something solidly middle-of-the-road. I have to keep reminding myself that this is a feature and not a bug.

A cluster of articles arising from the work of the MCHSL + partners was just published in Journal of Ethnology and Folkloristics. Up 4/4 is "Basketry Craft Practice in Southwest China: The Case of Defeng Village" by Lijun Zhang and myself. Special thanks to the great JEF team. (Also on Sciendo)
