Folktale Week day 6: Storm.

The charm cast, they pulled the storm of sound and sorrow in.

(My body chose the worst week to get sick! I'm behind, but determined to see it through. One more to go...)

A black, blue, and white illustration of my folktale week character kneeling and pulling in the echo to their chest, now a storm of chaos. A book is lying on the ground in front of them.

For Day 6 of #FolktaleWeek2025 prompt #FolktaleWeekStorm:

In the Gaelic mythology of Ireland, Scotland & the Isle of Man, the divine old woman, or hag, created the landscape itself and the storms and weather of winter. Known by many names, she is the Cailleach (literally the old woman or hag) or 🧵
My Lino block print on 8” x 10” Japanese paper shows a blue-black frame with Celtic knot in each corner with the words “The Cailleach” at the top and “Beira Queen of Winter” at the bottom in lettering inspired by Gothic Celtic letters. Inside the frame is my illustration of the Old Hag, the Cailleach marching across the rocky, hilly landscape in a winter storm in two shades of blue. She wears a cloak and great plaid and has her staff in her right hand and her hammer in the left. She has blue skin and copper coloured teeth and grimaces in the wind indicated by swirling lines. There is snow falling and the land behind her is inspired by the Hag’s Head geologic feature named for her.

#FolktaleWeek Day 6: Storm

In Greek mythology, harpies personified the destructive power of storm winds. They're often characterized as ugly (as ferocious women often are), but I've always found them oddly beautiful.

A huge bolt of lightning cracked in the sky & thunder shook the cottage. A startled Eleanor leapt from her hiding place in the trunk. Death looked at the strange creature standing by the bed. It was very peculiar, covered with pink feathers.

Folktale Week 2025 Storm Tomorrow (continued) While Eleanor Sheep hid in the trunk, it started to storm outside. The wind blew and the rain came down. Thunder could be heard in the distance. Just then, Death burst through the door. He looked around the small cottage for Eleanor Sheep but she was not to be found. Suddenly, a huge bolt of lightning cracked in the sky and thunder shook the cottage. A startled Eleanor leapt from her hiding place in the trunk. Eleanor Sheep looked at Death and Death looked at the strange creature standing by the bed. It was peculiar, covered with pink feathers, and there was some sort of liquid dripping from it. Death was so shocked that he screamed, “Aaagh!” Eleanor Sheep (not realizing what she looked like) was so startled, that she screamed, “Aaagh!” right back. Death, frightened, ran quickly out of the cottage. And he never returned. Eleanor Sheep smiled. ----- Stay tuned tomorrow for the final conclusion of Eleanor Sheep and the story, 'Tomorrow'. ----- This year I am adapting and reworking an old Hungarian Folktale about an old woman and death. ----- Folktale Week 2025 and all its magic is brought to you by these talented artists below! @debrastyer @louve.draws @matejalukezic **More information about the challenge from @folktaleweek Conjure up your creations, research your favorite folk & fairy tales and get ready to make all your fabulous art!
