The little wooden stage in the middle of Maplewood Park had been empty for years. Once, it had hosted summer concerts, puppet shows and community theatre, but lately its paint was peeling, weeds grew between the boards, and most people walked past without giving it much thought. Except for twelve-year-old Sophie. Sophie loved theatre. She loved everything about it - the costumes, the ridiculous props, the nervous feeling before a curtain opened and especially the strange magic that happened when ordinary people stepped onto a stage and became someone else.

Maya had a habit of treating rest like a prize she could only claim after completing absolutely everything. Unfortunately, “everything” was a sneaky little jerk that kept adding things to the list. There was always another load of laundry, another email, another room that needed cleaning, another errand she could squeeze in before dinner. Even when she sat down, she wasn't really resting. She'd scroll through her phone while mentally reorganizing cupboards, planning tomorrow and wondering whether she should get up and wipe down the bathroom sink. One Saturday afternoon, Maya was standing in her kitchen staring at a spectacularly unimpressive pile of dirty dishes when she suddenly realized she was exhausted.

By Friday afternoon, Claire felt as though the week had lasted approximately three months. Nothing catastrophic had happened. It had simply been one of those weeks where life seemed determined to test her using the smallest possible inconveniences, delivered continuously. Monday morning began with an alarm she somehow slept through, followed by coffee spilled down the front of the only clean shirt she actually wanted to wear. Tuesday brought an unexpected bill. Wednesday arrived carrying a headache, an overflowing inbox and a conversation she'd been dreading. By Thursday evening, Claire was standing in front of the refrigerator eating shredded cheese directly from the bag because preparing an actual meal felt like an unreasonable demand.

When Emma woke up Saturday morning, she decided she was going on a picnic. There was no special occasion. No birthday, anniversary, or celebration. The sun was shining, she had nowhere she needed to be, and there was an unopened jar of strawberry jam in the cupboard that seemed like a perfectly reasonable excuse to eat sandwiches outside. She packed a basket with sandwiches, strawberries, lemonade, cookies, and far more food than one person could possibly eat. Then she grabbed a blanket and walked to a little park near her house.

When Claire lost her job, everything seemed to fall apart at once. She had spent years living carefully enough that she thought she could survive a setback. Then the company she worked for closed without warning. Her savings disappeared into rent and bills. Her car broke down. Job applications went unanswered. Within a few months, Claire was counting coins at the grocery store and pretending she wasn't hungry when friends asked if she'd eaten. One rainy afternoon, she walked into a tiny neighborhood café because she had an interview nearby and needed somewhere warm to wait.
