Powerhouse Parramatta, a $915 million cultural institution in western Sydney, is set to launch its first in-house food program during a 23-day opening festival beginning November 7, 2026. The festival will feature a diverse range of culinary events including cooking demonstrations, dinners, and discussions led by renowned chefs and food personalities. Among the highlights are appearances by Maggie Beer, Josh Niland of Saint Peter, and Stephanie Alexander, who will share their expertise on topics ranging from seafood butchery to Lebanese feasts. The museum has collaborated with local food businesses such as Harris Park's IndoChainese restaurant and Circle Harvest, Australia's largest insect protein farm, to curate these events. Kylie Kwong, Powerhouse Parramatta associate, emphasized the importance of food in connecting communities, stating that it carries family history, identity, and belonging across generations. Three inaugural events have already sold out, including the Family DINEasties feast hosted by Kwong with writers Lee Tran Lam and Kevin La. The festival will include 179 events, with 65% being free, spanning from First Nations culture to space and science. The venue features a working rooftop garden, a commercial kitchen, and a 200-seat amphitheatre demonstration kitchen. Powerhouse Parramatta aims to create a space where culture is made with, by, and for communities, reflecting the multicultural fabric of western Sydney. The opening festival will showcase the museum's commitment to integrating food culture into its broader cultural programming, offering both paid and free events to engage a wide audience.
