Not really true. The lack of identity authentication, privacy protection and poor regulation is what is destroying the WWW, as Sir Tim Berners-Lee has been pointing out for years. Accountability is required.

In 1994 @ukfundraising was published , the first web resource for charity fundraisers. Since its early days charities have used the web to show the remarkable difference that they & their supporters make, and to ask for support. #Web30 #ForTheWeb

Great inspirational keynotes in #Dublin from Sir @timberners_lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, on the open web #fortheweb and @ivyeross on future of hardware design.

Design creates culture. Culture shapes values. Values determine the future.

Since 2013, i'm a research professor for information visualization at @FHPotsdam. Almost everything we work on at @uclab_potsdam is #ForTheWeb.

We rely on what @timberners_lee prototyped 30 years ago, which in turn builds on the Internet protocols devised 50 years ago!

In 2012, i finished my PhD at @UCalgary on visualization for exploratory search.

That was at a time when the @W3C declared HTML5 a candidate recommendation, Adobe announced the end of Flash, and Chrome passed IE in terms of usage share.

In 2006, i did an internship at @DCCUChile’s Center for Web Research. It was the era of tagging and Web 2.0, and i was working—with @mantruc—on distributed photo sharing.

While I found the community of Flickr intriguing, its centralized nature irritated me.

In 1996, i was spending many hours after school at a Sun workstation in a dimly lit computer pool at @OVGUpresse, where i tried my first steps in HTML.

It was the glorious age of Geocities and GIFs. I found it so exciting to surf the Web on Netscape Navigator!

On the 30th anniversary of the proposal, Tim BL recorded a short ~7 min podcast with his thoughts of the current climate on the use of the web, for good and for not so good (Léon) and lists 3 key issues as he sees it. Very much worth a listen. Enjoy!
