Denmark today announced it is acquiring “several hundred sea mines” to protect and block 🇩🇰Danish waters and straits. It is about partly rebuilding the Cold War capacity, where the navy had thousands of sea mines. No name has been revealed but a likely candidate is 🇫🇮 Forceit.

An interesting thing is the fact that with the Danes currently lacking dedicated mineships, one of the quickest solutions to get auxilliaries or other non-dedicated platforms mining is in fact a cooperation between Forcit and Danish company SH, which presented their solution back in 2023.

The mine, designated PM16 in Finnish service, has been developed and is almost entirely manufactured in Finland. Its sophisticated sensors let the onboard computer to be programmed to discriminate between different targets and e.g. go dormant for winter to save batteries. Optimum sea depth 20-70 m.
