It's clear from the article that ICE is *miserable* here. They're freezing their asses off and being harassed everywhere they go. Property managers aren't allowing them access to rental properties and people know their rights and aren't letting them in.

But I will say, the historian in me knows that decline is a choice, that we can do better.
Our forebears beat the same sort of assholes in 1945 and their forebears beat the same sort of assholes in 1865 and the result wasn't perfect, but it was not decline - it was real, actual greatness.

I remain convinced this is happening at all because our forebears who faced fascism in the mid 20th C. had all but died off, and we celebrated their heroism and sacrifice without talking about why it was absolutely necessary.
I cannot express this enough: If and when the tide turns away from fascism, you cannot mistake a ceasefire for peace. They never, ever want peace. You must persecute those responsible to the ends of the earth. You must make future generations fear a repeat of their fate.
