Although Kuhn, in his post-Structure reflections, seemed to want to have it both ways—to mix Kant with the later Wittgenstein and to eschew foundationalism without opting for relativism (whether philosophical, cultural, or methodological)—from reading his critics, it seems that he gets it from both sides. Depending upon whom one reads, Structure was the leading edge of a radical and irrational attack on the very foundations of science and reason, an outmoded and rather tame version of social constructionism, or even a reactionary effort to maintain the authority of science by obscuring the political and commercial sources of scientific knowledge.

IMO we can consider it like this:

- A whole lot of people thought that they only think about souls as a figure of speech, but even a figure of speech can colonize a worldview
- At root isn't just soul-belief but what it underwrites: metaphysical foundationalism, that things have fundamental nature

I think a lot* of people don't realize that they actually do still believe in something like a soul, but until they clock that in themselves, they get kind of confused when talking with someone who doesn't believe in souls at all

Thanks! i think those problems predate postmodernism but I do wonder if there was a mistake in turning situated anti-foundationalism (a useful critical tool) into dogmatic non-foundationalism. The reception of Moyn bugged me that way.

That's the foundationalist trap. Every 'foundation' is a place where we stopped asking 'why?' - not because the question was answered, but because it stopped feeling urgent. Foundationalism mistakes the disappearance of doubt for its resolution. The bedrock is just where drilling stopped.
