Bonus game

On his arrival at Lucasfilm Games in 1982, @davidbfox.com hoped to create a game which put you inside an X-Wing. The rights were then entrusted to Atari, so he created Rescue on Fractalus! (1984) 👌

"Rescue on Fractalus, a game with pixels so large you can count them by hand, is everything – and exactly – what it wants to be."

Rescue on Fractalus!: A sci-fi save ’em up
This sci-fi rescue ’em up by Lucasfilm – yes, that Lucasfilm – builds an entire game around one stunning technical achievement: Real time 3D flying within a fractal-generated land…

RIP Loren Carpenter (1947-2025), who I just learned passed away on December 21 at the age of 78. He worked for the Lucasfilm Computer Graphics Division (where he helped create the Genesis effect for Star Trek 2, and Rescue on Fractalus!). He co-created RenderMan and was chief scientist of Pixar. 🤯

If you missed it, @geoffreybunting.bsky.social wrote a comprehensive and heartfelt retrospective on #RescueOnFractalus, my first game at #LucasfilmGames #LucasArts in honor of its 40th anniversary. Lots of videos, great quotes, covering this magical time.

The rare Arcade Express (later named Electronic Games Hotline) was a biweekly U.S. supplement to the magazine Electronic Games - here's 1982 coverage of the Atari/Lucasfilm deal that led to Rescue On Fractalus and Ballblazer. (As well as a separate Raiders Of The Lost Ark deal!)

Rescue on Fractalus was one of Lucasarts' first games, and it was a game of many first. Not for having a three dimensional persistant open world in their flight simulator; not for having foes that tracked and chased you. It was the first game that lied about its own premise to horrify you.

Writing/coding this Pirate Jail sequence was deeply cathartic. I felt I was talking directly to those who pirated my first game, Rescue on Fractalus! And anyone who justified pirating #ZakMcKracken
In Zak McKracken you travel a lot

And every single time you were at the airport about to leave the states, you had to enter copy protection codes

After 5 incorrect entries in a row, you go to jail and the game is automatically over

I’m blushing after reading the enthusiastic praise heaped upon my 1st game at Lucasfilm Games 40 years ago. Rescue on Fractalus! is still one of my favorite projects I worked on. I was so naive I didn’t realize I was the project leader until about 6 months in. Thanks @kimimi.bsky.social #gamedev

I've talked about the awesome fan-created version of Rescue on Fractalus! ("Fractalus") by Luke's Software. If you don't, you have to check it out.

One area Luke could use some help with is the Jaggi animation. Luke's not an animator. Know anyone who could volunteer? www.lsdwa.com/contact/
