Anyway, I wish the forces of fragmentation in basically all strategy games were stronger. Most games should not feel like there is a global progression towards state consolidation, so much as a continuous push and pull, fragmentation and consolidation in waves.

Municipal fragmentation creates significant collective action problems in housing as every jurisdiction seeks to maximize property tax revenue while minimize spending on services (read: schools for poor kids).
A minimum population size for local government in general would solve literally hundreds of problems. Lots of cities should be annexed or disincorporated.
the degree of both autonomy and corruption inside tiny police departments in the U.S. is ridiculous.

History check: Border Patrol has existed since 1924. ICE? Born in 2003 from post-9/11 paranoia. It didn’t evolve it was engineered. Not for order, but for fear, fragmentation, and unchecked enforcement.

Agree with this. Also ultimately everyone hates it - people dislike ads, particularly political ones, most tech companies don’t want the hassle, it aids fragmentation, etc.
I think the case for banning online political advertising is very strong; online is not only the modern equivalent of broadcast TV, it allows people to tailor different messages to different groups, which is something we should obviously be regulating in a democracy.
