In March 1865 #FredDouglas went to DC for Lincoln’s 2nd inauguration. The City was full of wounded Union soldiers, Confederate deserters, and escaped and emancipated African Americans. The war was almost over, but rebellion “had reached the verge of madness.” Something desperate would happen.

I’ve been reading a book on #FredDouglas, and Lincoln comes across a bit sphinx like. The sane was said about FDR. Good politicians have to hold their cards close because others will switch and react to their perceptions of you for purely political ends.
if your grand approach to politics is bloodless poll-testing so that you're always aligned with wherever public opinion happens to be, you've already lost

“The confederate slaveholding traitors are now only on the outer wave of the whirlpool of treason; every circle they now make will bring them nearer the centre that is certain to swallow them up, and hurl them to the bottom of its howling waters.” #FredDouglas

One of the most disgusting things about chattel slavery was that it incentivized rape and incest. Slaves were property, so raping and enslaving your own children was a potential means of increasing your wealth. #FredDouglas

“Now, the next best thing, if we cannot make [Southerners] love us, is to make them fear us.” #FredDouglas

So if we can’t make MAGA see common sense we should embarrass them and make them social outcast for speaking such stupid tripe, and make others embarrassed to listen to them.

“He #FredDouglas believed, as many reasonable Americans have ever since, that the significance of states’ rights doctrine is in the issue for which it is employed.”

#FredDouglas after the election of 1860 though all the secession talk would come to nothing. After all, while Lincoln was against the expansion of slavery, he had shown a willingness to compromise on slavery where if existed.

If I had, if in a superficial but culturally profound way, been more like #FredDouglas, I to would probably have seen Brown as a freedom fighter, as an unalloyed tool for Good.

“Take them (Republicans in 1856), …not merely for what they are but further we have good reason to believe they will become.”

“Instead of walking straight up to the great wrong and demand its utter overthrow, we are talking of limiting it, circumscribing it, surrounding it with free states, and leaving it to die of inward decay,” #FredDouglas criticism of the new Republican Party.

For it is not light that is needed, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake. The feeling of the nation must be quickened…the hypocrisy of the nation must be exposed.”

The compromise of 1850 , with its reinforced fugitive slave law, accelerated the abolitionist move away from moral suasion towards political action and armed resistance.

First comes the oppression, and then the resistance. Tyrants lie and say it’s the other way around.

It makes for a boring but informative read, even when the subject is as fascinating, complex, and impressive as #FredDouglas.

Reading up on #FredDouglas and it’s one in a series of biographies I’ve read on advocates, and let me tell you, advocacy work is long, hard and boring.

It’s interesting to see how the concept of Truth worked in time of #FredDouglas, when there were far fewer records, visual and written.

In the mid 1846 #FredDouglas left Ireland to continue his tour of Scotland. While he was in Scotland raising money for and awareness of abolitionism, Scots were in the U.S. raising money for the Free Church of Scotland.

In 1845 #FredDouglas arrived in Ireland, which at the time was wholly controlled by the UK. That same year the potato blight first appeared in a Dublin market.

Reading up on #FredDouglas, as I have on other abolitionist, and let me just tell y’all, the American left has always been a bit cooky and tactically naive. Maybe it’s a feature, not a bug, but it’s definitely a weakness politically.

For #FredDouglas it is the opposite. Raised in the Cotton Rich South, a newly free Douglas is shocked to see the wealth and prosperity of the North.
