Note: get a HDD with FreeHDboot (SSD is fine but doesn't perform better on a PS2)

There's literally tens of thousands available, they still work, and you get one of the greatest video game libraries of all-time. It's from a better era.

Ok, so I was googling around what I actually need to play games from an HDD/SSD, and it seems the modchip is not only not needed but could actually interfere with FreeHDBoot/FreeMCBoot 🤔 so, is there any reason to install it if I'm not planning to use a DVD drive?

apparently there's a new way to do it where the drive has a partition formatted in a way a PC can actually read which sounds great but like every other method it has its own weird limitations

Just listed in my website this #PS2 with EasyHDD and a 480GB SSD. It is configured to boot from the hard disk through FreeHdBoot. Probably the most convenient softmod you can have for the PS2! 😁

Testing of the modchip installed worked as expected. Here playing a NTSC-J copy of Final Fantasy X-2 on a PAL console.
For the HDD I tried to install FreeHDBoot but it froze at boot. I think is probably incompatible with the modchip. However using a regular FreeMcBoot didn't have that problem

I have installed a solid state drive into my childhood ps2 by replacing the IDE/Molex connectors in the network adapter with a sata one and installed freehdboot on it. Took a few hours to set up but it's pretty nice, I shall rely on the disc reader no longer! I only have one game downloaded so far.

Totally just modded the PS2 to accept an SSD, installed freehdboot onto said SSD, and now loading games onto it...

Comprobado. Si instalas el modbo y tienes puesto el disco duro con el freehdboot este último no te inicia y se queda pillado la consola. Tendré que tirar de memory card o ponerle algo distinto al disco duro compatible con el modbo.

i have a 32 *megabyte* Sony Microvault from who knows what year that still functions well enough that i trust it when softmodding game systems. i installed FreeHDBoot with it. a 512mb Crucial Gizmo injects GoldHEN on my PS4. the 2024 Verbatim 64gb can't even copy a 1gb game backup without dying

It seems that Tonyhax for PS1 only works in Memory Card Slot 1 for PS1 games, so I can't move the PS1 memory card to slot 2.

It seems that Tonyhax for PS1 only works in Memory Card Slot 1 for PS1 games, so I can't move the PS1 memory card to slot 2.

Y, sí, efectivamente, esta juanqueada con FreeHDBoot, una variante de FreeMCBoot para disco duro. La interfaz ofrece la posibilidad de lanzar aplicaciones caseras e incluso reiniciar o apagar la consola a través del mando. ¡Como con la PS3! 😁

The FreeHDBoot requires the network adapter and I plan to convert an original to SATA for the SSD so I'm probably going to at least give it a shot
