On September 1st + 2nd, dozens of young Sudanese men and boys, as well as people of other nationalities, are set to stand trial in smuggling cases in Chania, Crete.

Wahnsinnig glücklich über den heutigen Erfolg auf Kreta, wo erstmals ein Geflüchteter des Vorwurfs der Schleuserei freigesprochen wurde, eben weil er ein Geflüchteter ist.
Niom wird aus dem Gefängnis entlassen und kann endlich zu seiner Frau, die im achten Monat schwanger ist!

🥳 In a completely unexpected turn, the court acquitted Niom today of all charges!

The court accepted the defence’s argument that, as an asylum seeker fleeing the war in Sudan, he must not be criminalised for steering the boat.

Of course, this is the only right decision to take. 1/4

Niom is one of the many young Sudanese refugees who have been imprisoned in Greece—for steering the boat or taking on another task during the journey.

Ariad is one of the about 50 Sudanese teenagers currently imprisoned on smuggling charges after arriving in Crete this and last year.

There were about 70 passengers on the boat he crossed with.

Everyone had to help a little — and so did Ariad. Anyone in his position would have done the same. 1/6

On 6 March, M. was sentenced to 25 years in prison & a fine of 3 million Euros in Heraklion, Crete. He’s one of 9 people convicted that day — and one of around 50 Sudanese teenagers currently imprisoned just for steering a boat or helping during the journey to Europe. They fled the war in Sudan 1/5
