When people would actually ask me (they don’t) what’s the difference between a designer with a proper degree and the guy on the App Store who throws out another FreeToStart app every two months:

A lot of How Online Works when you realize that the people creating the user journeys were trained on ideas like the casino floor, or the supermarket, or a theme park. Traffic is traffic, and time is time. Time you spend with their site is time not spent elsewhere. That’s it. That’s all.

So Google deliberately made search, their signature product, worse to increase the amount of time we spend looking for things, increasing the amount of time we're looking at ads and IMO the liklihood we'll click on a scam
