“Liberating education consists in acts of cognition, not transferals of information.”
― Paulo Freire, Pedagogy of the Oppressed

BEYOND THIS. Education has the Freirean aim of cultivating critical consciousness among students. That is, it should provide students with the tools necessary to challenge and question the organization of the world, rather than adapting them TO the world as is often the case.

Have you heard of Paulo Freire? I think you'll like his theory

I had a wonderful chat with @bmitra.bsky.social about the promising potential of atproto for creating emancipatory information access systems - check out @jedi-workshop.bsky.social and arxiv.org/abs/2601.09600
So much valuable know-how that would be amazing to apply for search/IR on atproto ✨

#5 However, we must be wary of being trapped by the technologists-as-liberator frame. Instead, recently we started developing a notion of Freirean Design (arxiv.org/abs/2601.09600) to engage users in the active co-option and co-construction of platforms by underdesigning systems at design time.

I was thinking the same. Maybe Freirean capoeira is already so yesterday, but it happened before Instagram and Tik Tok.

Have fun No Kingsing without me, comrades. I'm trapped at home under a pile of grad school reading. The good news is that it'll enable me to covertly bring woke to the teens by smuggling it in under the Freirean notion of "conscientização".

This. My revolutionary act this week is doing a class on transgender issues here at the women's and children's shelter where I live. I'll be utilizing Freirean Praxis, meeting people where they are, and showing them who and what I am in a way that annihilates the right's "gender ideology" sophistry.
Remember! The revolution is every day, not some event in the far future. It's your relationships, and what you support & work for.

The revolution isn't the final tearing down of hierarchical power. That can't succeed until horizontal power is built. The revolution is building that horizontal power

Shitty, lazy work: yes, but 'what would Freire think!' isn't the philosophical slap-down they think it is. A Freirean perspective would be that AI's used this way is a logical extension of traditional education's purpose: to de-humanise and oppress. The institution is part of the problem.

Decolonizing Cannabis education means challenging dominant narratives and reclaiming knowledge through critical consciousness. Inspired by Freirean principles, we can center marginalized voices, dismantle stigma, and promote liberation through science and history. #InPress #Accepted

Amazingly, lots of (UK) teachers aren’t taught Freirean (1970) ed philosophy. Essentially, humans are the only species who can intervene in reality in order to change it. Education, therefore, must be a humanisation project in which YP are facilitated to understand & enact that capacity.

Working on this paper by John Rudolph now. Quite an interesting description of the history of "scientific literacy" with an argument for its dismissal. I am writing a paper taking the opposite position but by reframing scientific literacy on Freirean grounds.

Given my profession and interests, the fact that I can’t spell Freire naturally and without triple checking is a problem. Forget about “Freirean”.

interesting! what about other stuff - Journal of Education Policy, or different journals with 'theory' in title? A lot of the work of people like Peter McLaren or Henry Giroux, for instance, is explicitly Freirean (and philosophical, though not explicitly!)

I think religion is undeniable in South America and their liberation theology and freirean pedagogy is a strong and necessary part of the fight for their liberation.

I never got around to reading your book on universities, you write too many books and it's impossible to keep up 😅 But yes, there's very clearly a Freirean story to be told about higher ed, not only about so-called basic education. My own teaching is very Freirean, all flipped and conversational.
