Tuesday evening, the Oakmont Borough Council addressed the detention of Oakmont resident and father Jose Flores, who was taken by ICE in front of his 8-year-old child. During the meeting, council members and borough officials stated they were not notified of the operation and emphasized their responsibility to protect the safety and dignity of Oakmont residents.Council members demanded justification for Jose’s detention, affirmed that he was legally authorized to work while awaiting a pending asylum case, and made clear that Oakmont police do not enforce immigration law or inquire about immigration status. Borough leaders also signaled they are considering refusing any 287(g) agreement, rejecting police collaboration with ICE.What happened last week has left families shaken and fearful, but it has also made clear that local leadership matters. Communities deserve transparency, accountability, and policies that prioritize human dignity over harm.We will continue to show up, document, and stand with families impacted by immigration enforcement because no one should be taken from their family without explanation, and no community should be left in the dark.#FrontlineDIGNITY #Pittsburgh #PittsburghPA #pgh #Oakmont RapidResponse
