"The top story of the moment is the one story that our most influential newsrooms won’t touch: That the United State has become an authoritarian state." — Dan Froomkin @froomkin.bsky.social

Heavy lifting by Dan Froomkin makes for light reading here. Really good job of sorting out media coverage of Trump's $5,000 gimmick.
What they SHOULD have written:

TRUMP MAKES $5,000 DESPERATION PLAY
Trump offers voters a nonsensical, impossible kickback in hopes of stopping the blue wave likely to crush Republicans next month.

So what DID they write? I handed out grades.

Every journalist there knew it was a desperate, meaningless gambit. But most didn’t even give their audience a hint. I give out grades.

A must read. Both for the call to the media and for the brutal details and links gathered in this Froomkin post.
Why does someone who overstayed their visa need to be held in shackles? Does any child belong in a prison camp? Does anybody deserve to be underfed, or brutalized, or denied medical care? presswatchers.org/2026/02/the-...

I launched a new weekly newsletter yesterday, in which I'll be reporting about the people who aren't bending the knee. Maybe it will give you some hope. www.headsupnews.org

I write my weekly Heads Up News newsletter to give people a little hope in an otherwise excruciating news climate. It focuses on significant acts of resistance. Please give it a look and consider a paid subscription. www.headsupnews.org

Nearly 60 years ago, my later father coauthored the first rigorous analysis, largely based on census and labor-force data, that refuted the popularly-held view that automation would soon put many if not most Americans out of work.

He's still right!

"The newsroom is constantly under pressure from its leaders to prove that it is not taking sides in politics — or democracy, for that matter." — Dan Froomkin on the New York Times. presswatchers.org/2025/07/the-...

I think this is an under-appreciated factor.

So, per @Froomkin, what we're getting now in DC is sequence of
-F-35s
-F-18s
-More F-35s
-F-22s about to arrive.

Again, I love airplanes and airshows. But this is wasteful beyond belief. (Another F-35 pack zooms by just now.)

Someone can calculate millions-per-flight-hr of each craft

Dan Froomkin, Charles Kaiser and I discusses the SCOTUS decision authored by Justice Samuel Alito that essentially administered a death knell to what had survived from the Voting Rights Act, and how legacy media bungled coverage of what ensued.

2/ Now read Dan Froomkin, commenting on this news:

"Billionaire media entrepreneur Robert Albritton announced that he is bankrolling 'the next great Washington newsroom.'”

Albritton seeks, of course, "readers from every part of the political spectrum."

This superb column by Dan Froomkin @froomkin.bsky.social should be required reading in all newsrooms, editorial boards, social media outlets and by every blogger and podcast host. Froomkin presents an iron clad case: this regime is inherently criminal.

What will it take for our legacy news organizations to sound the alarm about the U.S. becoming an authoritarian country? Where should these organizations draw the line? (If Trump defies a court order, maybe?) And what should they do then? I want to hear your thoughts. froomkin@gmail.com
