how often do you think about the not-that-long-lost Dog 2?

I also had never heard of Fuegian dogs until now! How exciting to think humans domesticated a canid completely separate from modern dogs in South America. To nobody's surprise, they were exterminated by European colonists and were all gone by 1919. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuegian...

still on the subject of weird domestications: there are a number of extinct dog articles on wikipedia & they're all quite sad but this one I just found has to be the saddest of them all en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuegian...

Argentinian pseudo leftists: End nationhood, it's time for revolution

Same people on the Falklands: No but you don't understand this obscure fish bone from 1013 was chewed by a Fuegian and spat out from where it'd reach these shores, the Argentine nation must own them

Again:
1) The Falklands original inhabitants were the Brits. Fuegian people never settled there.

The indigenous people of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego actually did domesticate the local culpeo "fox" (which is a 'zorro' species, South American canines that are more closely related to dogs and wolves than to true foxes).

More birds found on deck of Sapphire Princess during our Epic Cape Horn Cruise. A worrying trend as they are attracted/confused by the bright lights of the ship. All birds were released unharmed & seemed fine. #seabirds #BirdsSeenIn2025 #Argentina

This very new paper claims that Patagonian dogs appeared to really be domestic culpeos, while the Tierra del Fuego "Fuegian Dog" was really canis lupus familiaris, brought across the Bering Land Bridge by early people.

Okay the thing is that this argument doesn't suggest the FI should be surrendered to Argentina, it suggests it should be given to the Fuegian peoples.

And why wouldn't they? Even the penguins accept British rule and no significant population was overthrown by the Falklanders. If you'd use the Fuegian fishermen well it's obscene to do that given we know who slaughtered them and it wasn't the Brits
