Using Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum in cotton, we found:
•Lower bacterial richness and evenness in the hyphosphere
•Greater similarity among hypha-associated communities across bulk-soil and rhizosphere contexts and some bacterial genera consistently associated with hyphae

Water, disease and competitiveness: Europatat highlights priorities for Europe’s potato sector
Europatat’s September–October 2026 newsletter highlights water resilience, post-harvest disease protection and closer cooperation across Europe’s potato sector. Developments include a water workshop, PATAFEST research on Fusarium dry rot susceptibility, and a new POMATO platform for sharing bacterial disease knowledge. The issue also reviews Madrid’s International Potato Symposium, welcomes new members from Greece and Spain, and looks ahead to Europatat’s 75th anniversary congress in Lisbon, Portugal, scheduled for June next year.

Fusarium Wilt: Indonesia’s Silent Epidemic
By: Gert Antonio Tobing–Indonesian Science Affairs Fellow 2026 A fungal strain attacks banana production across the Indonesian archipelago. What does science say about it? In Aceh, at the northern tip of Sumatra, farmers were planting new gardens of Pisang Barangan, a banana variety popularly known for its sweetness. To get started, they dug up young shoots from gardens nearby. “The seedlings looked healthy,” says Catur Hermanto, a plant disease researcher at Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), who saw those gardens.

Xia et al. in the Li Lab at Nanjing Agricultural University reveal that the Fusarium mycotoxin DON hijacks crop metabolism via NAD+-dependent enzymes, while MIPS-driven myo-inositol metabolism triggers PI(4,5)P2-dependent vacuolar sequestration of DON, conferring broad Fusarium resistance.
