More crustose mosaic lichens growing on the top of Cnoc Fola (Bloody Foreland). Likely to be Fuscidea cyathoides (many thanks to Di Napier fo the ID!)

My favourite Fuscidea cyathoides stone, Cnoc Fola, Donegal.

I've photographed this stone for three years in a row. I keep meaning to put together a stop motion animation of the lichens!

On birch bark at Kelling Heath - Normandina pulchella, Jamesiella anastomosans, Fuscidea lightfootii. And a fruiting Hypotrachyna, maybe afrorevoluta.

More lichen from my adventure yesterday on Hesworth Common, Sussex - Fuscidea lightfootii, looking all bobbly, Evernia prunastri, and Graphis elegans #lichen

Upland weathered fence posts are #lichen-rich with a wide range of species. Factors at play: exposure, usually well-lit, wood type and chemical treatment. Bird perching leads to manuring and an ornithocoprophilous lichen community. #lichengbi

Other lichen finds from our trip up to the disused Dufton lead mine include Peltigera neckeri, which likes lead-contaminated soil, and more common rock and heath species: Porpidia tuberculosa, Fuscidea kochiana and Cetraria islandica. #LichenGBI #lichens

Been liking the lichen (Fuscidea cyathoides) on this sunny (but bitterly cold) Boxing Day.

Fuscidea lightfootii and Flavoparmelia caperata on fallen cone of am introduced Monterey Pine, Pinus radiata. Ashburnham Park SSSI, High Weald, nr Battle.

1/3 This is Fuscidea lightfootii from Bracorina, Loch Morar, Scotland. First for hectad NM79. Normally fertile, it's sometimes found infertile as here, with soredia (powdery vegetative propagules) only. In this state, it's easy to confuse with other 'dreaded green sorediate crusts': dreaded…

Fuscidea lygaea is a possibility
December 24, 2024 at 4:40 PM
In the first photo the yellow one is Rhizocarpon geographicum, brown foliose one is probably Parmelia omphalodes, pink-brown crustose a Fuscidea, probably P. cyathoides. 2nd photo Tephromela atra with a dark prothallus (shown in crop below)

The close up photo shows soralia so not Fuscidea lygaea. If the chemical tests are -ve it could be Porpidea tuberculosa. K/UV would help.

Buellia disciformis is one of those crustose lichens on twigs with a white thallus and black lecideine apothecia (wine gums). Similar looking lichens are Lecidella elaeochroma, Amandinea punctata or Fuscidea lightfootii so need to do spores and testing to narrow it down. 2/4

In my search for Fuscidea lightfootii (which as I understand has a more coarse thallus than Amandinea punctata) I came found this #lichen. Compared to the other Amandinea it had a coarser thallus. Microscopically I would say still Amandinea - but heavily colonized by al lichenicolous fungus.

Could be wrong, but I think that lovely mousy-brown patchwork with black outlines is Fuscidea cyathoides

After recent conversations about Amandinea punctata and Fuscidea lightfootii @peterbraubach.bsky.social @larkinlichen.bsky.social Here's a thread on F. lightfootii, though at the time I was more concerned to show the difference between it and Lecidella elaeochroma NN7298, Inverness-shire 1/5

This looks lije Fuscidea cyathoides. Mousy brown not yellow green.

@sueinscotland.bsky.social suggested Fuscidea lightfootii as a differential. My spores are approximately 12,5-14,1 µm x 5,8-5,9 µm. For me this seems to better fit A. punctata. Its in the extremes for F. lightfootii.
What do you think?
