April 30 1998, Bomberman Hero debuted on the N64 in Japan!

In a GDRI interview, we learned from Super Bonk director Shoichi Yoshikawa that Hero started development as Ultra Genjin, a 3D version of Bonk/PC Genjin!
This partially explains the games more linear design and lack of multiplayer!

After being alerted about possible misconduct, the I4R are reproducing published papers that use data from a specific NGO (GDRI). This thread releases the first 2 reports and provides more information about the work and responses/statements from authors journals and journals. 🧵

Some of the articles have notes. The most interesting: The article on Log, from February 1990, mentions they developed a golf game for Game Boy released in 1989. 100,000 copies sold. That's gotta be Nintendo's Golf, right? Log was the originator of the eroge brand Hard and made some shogi games.

Lot of stuff in the Volk papers, but about the only thing relevant to GDRI is this Japan trip report by Tom Sloper. archive.gamehistory.org/item/84f550c...

As usual, the GDRI steps up to make the story behind a game clear and, in this case, hilariously ironic. Knowing that the "tax expert" whose creative involvement the game touts so cheerfully was suspended by the SEC would be like learning that Wall Street Kid was designed by Michael Milken
Tax Avoiders requires someone with legal resources and knowledge of tax law because there's a whole story there. bsky.app/profile/jpar...
If you watch only ONE video today... I admire your sense of restraint. Well done.

But if you watch a BUNCH of video today, please make one of them this new episode of NES Works Gaiden, which explores perhaps the most impressive official Atari 2600 creation ever, Solaris. youtu.be/MlRSj4_ViB0

More traction for the Islam - GDRI saga. Monash claiming that he “holds no official position with GDRI and has not received any personal or material benefit from GDRI since its inception in 2010”. Hmmmh.

According to Kiyoshi Utata, the Mega-CD version of Nostalgia 1907 was outsourced.

According to Akira Sakuma, the development of the arcade game BurgerTime was outsourced to a company based in Akihabara (which is still in business). GDRI reports that a SAS programmer - Ken Obara - worked on it (as did Sakuma, who was still a student and later joined Data East).
