'Catastrophic': Swiss glaciers lose 20% of mass in five years.

Swiss glaciers saw 5.5% of their volume melt away just this year, the second-biggest melt on record, Glacier Monitoring in Switzerland (GLAMOS) network reports

Some more impressions from our GLAMOS @vaw-glaciology.bsky.social measurement campaign today. The landscape is simply awesome but the change from year to year is hard to take.

What does glacier fieldwork look like for @matthias-huss.bsky.social , head of #GLAMOS? 🧊📏
Politiken followed him on #PlaineMorte, where he documents the beauty, and rapid loss, of Swiss ice.

Switzerland's glaciers melted considerably over the past 12 months to log their fourth-largest reduction in ice volume on record, monitoring body GLAMOS has said.

The glacier season has started 🎉
Fantastic day out on Great Aletsch #Glacier for GLAMOS!
Perfect conditions but incredibly little snow. Will be another harsh year if there's no little wonder 🤔

The beauty of ice-clad mountains is just incredible! Glaciologists marvel at the hanging #glaciers of Piz Palü during our GLAMOS winter surveys.
The situation is precarious with extremely little snow, especially on the glacier tongues

The snout of Findel #Glacier, Zermatt, on 4 April 2025. 2600masl, snow depth: zero.
It is incredible, we're seeing the third winter #drought in four years...
The delicate crevasse situation is an additional challenge to our GLAMOS measurements...

Don't miss the latest GLAMOS report, a comprehensive look at glacier change in 2024 🧊❄️
Despite heavy winter snow, 2.3% of ice volume was lost! 😱 🔥

A hole in the #glacier ice... Nature is just incredible.
We were at Glacier de la Plaine Morte today for GLAMOS measurements. Bad situation, as expected. Major mass loss has already occurred and melting continues at crazy rates. Wow, let's see where this is ending...

It's the time of the year GLAMOS measurements on around 20 Swiss #glaciers start. We've been on Rhone, Allalin, Corvatsch, ... these days.
Not all as shiny white as here! Major losses also in 2025. Stay posted for the press release via @scnat.ch on 1 Oct

Incredible ice loss measured again at #Konkordiaplatz on the #Aletsch #Glacier, home to the thickest ice in the #Alps (still about 800 m!). Yesterday’s survey revealed another –4.6 m of ice gone in just one year. :(

Winter #snow survey on Glacier de la Plaine Morter for GLAMOS today.
Blue skies and strong wind. And LITTLE snow. It's my 16th year on that #glacier and I can't remember seeing so poor snow coverage. Curious how this is evolving...

Switzerland has lost almost 20% of its glacier ice in just five years.
If emissions continue to rise as they have, practically all glaciers in the Swiss Alps could disappear by 2100.

Snow depth on glaciers is still moderately to strongly below average in all regions of Switzerland. The Northeast is most critical.

Drone shots from last week’s fieldwork on Glacier de Tortin by #VAW's @beerjanosch.bsky.social. This low-elevation glacier is in bad shape, with >2 m surface melt last year. Englacial data indicates temperate conditions. #KeepSwissGlaciersCool #1400ReasonsToAct (Data: GLAMOS)

REALLY?! We checked. Glamos measured a 5.5% ice volume loss in 2026 and almost 20% since 2021 — the worst five-year drop since 1950. That is volume, not the number of glaciers. Meltwater shortage is a real risk. Verdict: CHECKS OUT. Figures from Glamos.
