Shortly before 1 pm on September 18 in Westland, New Zealand, a thunderstorm produced a massive 176.5 kA positive CG stroke that caused significant damage to the radome and probably damaging the electronics as well.

That is not an ideal map to use for this case, because it only shows 6 months of data from 2010 when the GLD360 network was brand new.

That is not an ideal map to use for this case, because it only shows 6 months of data from 2010 when the GLD360 network was brand new.

That’s a misleading chart drawn from a too-limited time period that excludes the seasons where other regions see their worst storms.
A multi-year average from the same source & a density map look very different. The DRC has a significantly higher density of lightning strikes than any other country.

Vaisala owns and operates 2 networks - NLDN and GLD360. The two networks can be complementary, especially as you get further from CONUS.
Vaisala has also sold/installed >100 networks for customers globally.

I'm not sure how high the flash rates from GLM got in some of the other significant storms lately (like Ian or Milton), but while Melissa had a lot of eyewall lightning detected by GLD360, it certainly didn't compare to Milton last year.

GLM does a good job of detecting the expanse of lightning flashes and the optical energy produced by them. NLDN/GLD360 detect the point locations of lightning strokes, their peak currents, and whether they are in-cloud or cloud-to-ground.
