My DIY Atomic Clock mini rack is working! It uses a Rubidium / GPSDO reference to compare and measure other GPS-backed clocks... and even a cheap quartz crystal-based clock!

FINALLY got the last little gremlin on this thing fixed. Power button wasn't working properly so I had been using a test jumper to get it powered up whenever it gets mains voltage, but now ive got a 100% functonal frequency counter with a built in rubidium automotive standard. Dead on with a GPSDO

I recently upgraded my frequency references to a HP Z3801A and a FRK-L Rb reference and compared them to the various Leo Bodnar GPSDO references I have used over the years and discovered some interesting details that changed my station forever... 🧵⬇️

Finally got time to get on the shop roof and tweak the antenna farm this afternoon. Lifted my ADSB about 3 feet.

I was surprised how his latest LBE-1420 compared to a Rubidium reference and later the venerable HP Z3801A GPSDO when using Blue Ghost Doppler residuals to compare, YIKES! (see alt text). ⬇️

So for measurement work over the time periods common for Doppler work you are better served to obtain a reference source with good short term stability such as a GPSDO with a quality quartz oven based osc and a Rb source that is tamed to a GPSDO 1PPS source like a PRS10. See alt text.⬇️

After fixing this mistake, the frequency difference is on the order of 1 Hz. This is about 0.7 ppb, so it is within the accuracy that we could expect for the GPSDO at Bochum. So mystery solved!

I have gps locked 23cm beacon 20miles away. Only had to adjust the radio a little bit prior to firing up the gpsdo.
