Is this really how gpui is written? I wanna kill myself
November 4, 2026 at 9:58 PM
"gpui syntax is bad"

okay but you should not be reading or writing it anyway so it does not matter if the syntax is bad

oh damn, even discord is using GPUI now.. right as i'm considering on GPUI as the topic for my thesis research 👀

You should be able to replace the interface you use to interact with GPUI. We like simple constructs, explicitness, and tailwind, so that's the default we ship.

There's alternatives though:

oh wait this means gpui finally has AccessKit support.

Which means there's now a fully featured Rust UI library that's, like. Actually usable.

Discord switching away from React Native to using GPUI was not on my bingo card
November 4, 2026 at 11:50 PM
why gpui though? it's been nothing but difficult when i was trying to work on it

okay this has turned into a Rust+GPUI control center for my monitor, plus a CLI interface for scripting.

It will likely work on other BenQ monitors too, bc it checks your monitor's capabilities. no guarantees but this is pretty good so far.

So, is everyone porting everything to GPUI now?

i wonder what discord themes will look like in the gpui world
xan.lol xan @xan.lol · 1d
seeing this discord theme based on zed (inspired by it being based on gpui, before discord also moves to use that) made me recall how inconvenient its interface is again. we could've had tabs and worked with multiple windows? but no just one chat at a time; adhd havers be damned!

We've been early adopters of Rust since 2018 and a lot of our infra, voice tech, and even some of the current client is already Rust, the holy grail was getting the whole client there. That means Elec...

Today's darling HN link is BUI, Blender's UI library, which is "much faster than GPUI!", and part of me is happy that the programmer tradition of optimizing a single thing at the expense of everything else is alive and well.

Electron is very, very good. There’s a reason everyone uses it. GPUI is not nearly there yet.

given how interested in AI the gpui/zed folks are I'd hazard the vibe coded comment could be said about gpui as well

I like to exaggerate please don't take it as bad feedback 😭

gpui looks cool :))
November 4, 2026 at 10:42 PM
