Presentation: What do Pinochet’s coup in Chile in 1973, the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989, the collapse of the Soviet Union, the downfall of the Solidarnosc movement in Poland, the challenges faced by Mandela in post-apartheid South Africa, the September 11 attacks, the war in Iraq, the tsunami that devastated the coast of Sri Lanka in 2004, Hurricane Katrina the following year, and the practice of torture everywhere and in every place—Abu Ghraib or Guantánamo—today? All these moments in our recent history, Naomi Klein argues, are linked to the rise of “disaster capitalism.” Building on the activist discourse she began in her bestseller *No Logo*, Naomi Klein denounces, in *The Shock Doctrine*, the existence of coordinated operations aimed at ensuring that the planet falls under the control of the proponents of all-powerful neoliberalism. This ideology deliberately exploits crises and disasters to replace the democratic values to which societies aspire with the sole law of the market and the barbarism of speculation. Remarkably well-researched and documented, this secret history of the free market—which sets a new standard for investigative journalism—stands as essential reading for reassessing the challenges of the present and the future, for which the citizens of the world collectively bear a responsibility that cannot be delegated.
