Action shot of @jamesshepard3.bsky.social presenting his work at the #GURT2025 conference on food and language! 👏👏👏

Hanwool Choe gave such and interesting talk at #GURT2025; Deborah Tannen had some questions!

Deborah Tannen speaking about her work on conversational style, and on her next book on apologies. She said when we apologize, we are essentially seeking acknowledgment (that we exist and/or that our point of view is justified and seen) 🤔#GURT2025

To mark the 40th anniversary of Conversational Style, Cynthia Gordon kicked off a panel on how Deborah Tannen influenced 4 Georgetown scholars’ work on food and language, with Gordon focusing on Tannen’s yogurt dressing example and analyses of yogurt across Gordon’s 3 books #GURT2025

Alla Tovares giving a plenary talk on food and language as weapons in the Russian-Ukrainian military conflict #GURT2025

I figured I can try to late-skeet the #GURT2025 conference on language and food I just attended at Georgetown University. Here’s my notes on data from a data session on food & language in #StarTrek #TNG organized by Georgetown linguistics professor Dr. Cynthia Gordon and PhD student Michael Guarino

Disappointed I couldn't submit to #GURT2025 on language and food (I just wouldn't have had time to go) but happy to have been involved as an abstract reviewer. Feels like a tiny part of myself will be there in spirit at least

And then my AMAZING colleagues and friends Hanwool Choe and Gwynne Mapes discussed Tannen’s influence on their work on Mukbang and elite authenticity in food discourse, respectively. #GURT2025
