Simple question, but answer is more complicated - mostly as there's little research on 'out of season' flooding we have all experienced recently.
Can be good: removes silt, so better for oxygenation;
can be bad: washes away eggs completely..

Woodcock shooting season starts today in most of the UK (Scotland was 1 Sep).
Continental birds have not arrived yet so any shot birds will be red-listed British breeders.
GWCT suggests waiting until 1 December before targeting Woodcock.

Snipe are chunky monkies when it comes to tagging. Graham's post Steve attached highlighted tracking work, and there is other stuff going on, eg current GWCT project in Cornwall, which seems to pick up the odd (soft southern) Icelandic 😉, as well as Contis: www.gwct.org.uk/news/news/20...

Tagged snipe birds have begun their migrations mapping routes of breeding season
THE Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) has revealed new data from seven common snipe birds being tracked as part of a project to map the routes to their breeding grounds. So far it has shown five of the birds travelling to Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Germany. Researchers caught and fitted the birds with GPS tags in March this year - six in Cornwall and one in Fife, Scotland - in a bid to see where these elusive waders go to breed after spending the winter in the British Isles.

Hampshire farmers launch major new environmental plan
More than 100 farmers in the Hampshire Avon catchment have launched a groundbreaking Environmental Transition Plan, working together to reverse biodiversity decline, improve water quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Co-ordinated by the Environmental Farmers Group (EFG) and working to plans drawn up by the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT), the farmers believe they can meet, and potentially beat, the government’s targets in these areas. See also: Game Changers – Rob Shepherd, the ecosystems innovator “This plan is not another ‘top-down’ desktop wish list, but a commitment by the farmers themselves who care passionately about their local environment, and want to step up to maintain and improve the iconic habitats, wildlife and water systems on their land,” said EFG chairman Rob Shepherd. Nature recovery Based on Individual Farm Plans already undertaken, the farmers, who together manage 26% of the Hampshire Avon catchment, have indicated a willingness to allocate an average of 5.5% of their land for nature recovery – over and above what they already have in existing agri-environment schemes. By delivering a network of different habitats at scale, they believe they can meet or beat 11 of the government’s 13 targets for biodiversity recovery. These include: Increasing indicator...
