#GWTC-4
128 new mergers between black holes and neutron stars.

Today we're revealing the biggest ever update to our count of gravitational wave detections. New data from May 2023 to January 2024 has more than doubled the number we've seen.

Also, my partner in crime has his own thoughts on GWTC-4 and associated papers!
So, what can we say about the latest GWTC 4 catalogue?
In some ways, it's not too surprising, it's a 'firming up' of the clues we were getting from GWTC 3. But there's a couple of neat things: So, AGN channel perspective follows

The O4a results (GWTC-4) of LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA are now out 🥳

We have 128 new candidates of which 86 have a false alarm rate of less this 1 per year

Evidence for a forbidden range of black-hole masses is detected in data from the fourth Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog (GWTC-4) from LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA looking at binary black-hole systems, according to a paper in Nature. go.nature.com/4m1FKww 🔭 🧪

I have seen this and am already wondering if I can present the GWTC-4 marginal posteriors this way.

In 2015, the 1st gravitational-wave was detected. 11 years later, there's enough detections for patterns to emerge:
Fourth GW catalog (GWTC-4) by LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collab shows prominent peaks around 10 & 35 solar masses. Likewise, spin and mass ratios noticeably change around 20 & 40 solar masses.

Analysis of gravitational-wave data indicates merging binary black holes can be grouped into three subpopulations, each with distinct masses, spin characteristics, and likely formation pathways. doi.org/hbwstp
Astronomers find evidence for three subpopulations of merging black holes
Astronomers analyzing gravitational-wave data from the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Collaboration have reported that merging binary black holes fall into three distinct categories.

How do black holes become so massive? 🧪🔭

⚫️ ➡️ 🎆 ⬅️ ⚫️

Gravitational wave data reveal black holes can pack on weight (above 45 solar masses) through a series of collisions (mergers) between other black holes in dense star clusters.

The bias in chi_eff among the higher spin BH tests this fraction of prograde:retrograde mergers in AGN. Note also the preferred plane of the AGN weakens the strong limits on hierarchical mergers from GWTC 4, since those assume isotropic spins.
