Preparing for El Niño: How better forecasts and AI can help
On the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, GZERO Media’s **Tony Maciulis** sits down with **Celeste Saulo** , Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), to discuss the developing El Niño, the growing importance of early-warning systems, and how artificial intelligence is changing weather forecasting. * * * Saulo explains how warming waters in the central Pacific can alter weather patterns thousands of miles away, increasing the likelihood of heavier rainfall in some regions while bringing drier conditions to others. While every El Niño is different, she says years of monitoring and forecasting now allow meteorologists to better anticipate those impacts and give governments and communities more time to prepare. But a forecast is only useful if people can act on it. Saulo discusses the coordination required to translate global weather data into regional and local warnings, particularly as extreme weather events demand increasingly rapid responses. Effective early-warning systems, she says, depend not only on forecasting but also on understanding risk, communicating warnings, and ensuring communities know how to respond. AI is accelerating that work. From analyzing vast amounts of data and running forecasting models faster to translating warnings into multiple languages almost instantly, Saulo says the technology is helping meteorologists turn information into actionable warnings more quickly. The challenge now is ensuring those tools and warnings reach people in ways that reflect their language, culture, and local circumstances. This conversation is part of GZERO Media’s Global Stage series, bringing together leaders and experts to discuss the major issues shaping our world.

How AI is changing the cybersecurity battlefield
On the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, GZERO Media’s Tony Maciulis sits down with Hayete Gallot, Executive Vice President of Security at Microsoft, to discuss how artificial intelligence is transforming cybersecurity, and why traditional defenses must evolve to keep pace. Gallot says AI is “completely changing the physics of cyber.” Unlike humans, AI agents can operate around the clock, at enormous scale, and at speeds that make real-time monitoring and response increasingly critical. That creates new challenges inside organizations, where autonomous agents must be monitored and contained, as well as outside them, where attackers are already using AI to conduct autonomous cyber campaigns. The answer, Gallot argues, is increasingly to fight AI with AI. She discusses how AI-powered defenses can identify vulnerabilities, monitor agents, and respond to threats at machine speed, while also explaining where human oversight remains essential. For governments, businesses, and organizations adapting to this new environment, she says the fundamentals still matter: strong identity systems, software security, network isolation, and the ability to observe what AI agents are doing...

AI is moving too fast for the world to keep up
AI is racing ahead without rules, and **UN Secretary-General António Guterres** warns the consequences could be catastrophic. On GZERO World with **Ian Bremmer** , Guterres says AI is “running without control,” as the United States, China, and other leading powers race to develop increasingly powerful systems without adequate international guardrails. The stakes are too high for governments to simply leave AI governance to the companies building the technology. * * * Guterres says competition and innovation can (and should) continue, but they need guardrails before the race becomes a threat to all of humankind. He points to the Cold War, when the United States and Soviet Union established rules around nuclear weapons despite their rivalry, as a model for what is needed now. Without international cooperation, he warns, AI could become a competition in which “everybody loses,” a stark warning about a technology that could reshape the future of humanity. “This is a very dangerous race that could compromise even [powerful countries] and put at risk their own populations,” Guterres says, “When leaders of frontier AI companies express concerns about the existential risks of artificial intelligence, I don't think we can ignore it.” **GZERO World with Ian Bremmer, the award-winning weekly global affairs series, airs nationwide on US public television stations (check local listings).** ******New digital episodes of GZERO World are released weekly on YouTube.****Don't miss an episode:** subscribe to GZERO's YouTube channel **and turn on notifications (🔔).**

The UN at a crossroads, with Secretary-General António Guterres
This week on the GZERO World Podcast,**Ian Bremmer** sits down with **UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres** on the sidelines of the General Assembly for the final time in his official capacity as UN chief. After a decade as the UN’s top diplomat, the former Portuguese Prime Minister is leaving his position at a moment of great global instability. Wars grind on in Ukraine and Iran with no end in sight. Humanitarian crises in Gaza and Sudan have exposed how little leverage the international system has when powerful states and their partners act with impunity. With faith in global institutions at an all-time low, does the world’s most ambitious experiment in multilateralism still have a place? * * * While Guterres will be the first to acknowledge that the UN is weakened, he says it is far from obsolete. The old superpowers are discovering their limits, while middle and rising powers are demanding more influence. Those countries need a place to negotiate rules, build coalitions, and keep competition from becoming confrontation. For all its failures, the United Nations is still the only table where all 193 member states still have a seat. Guterres and Bremmer discuss all of that, as well as the erosion of international law, limits of superpowers, and why he believes AI is the most urgent challenge facing humanity. _Subscribe to the GZERO World Podcast on_ _Apple Podcasts__,__Spotify__,__Stitcher____, or your preferred podcast platform, to receive new episodes as soon as they're published_
