Wrapping up winter sampling in the desert

@nievesconcostrina.es en @laventanacadenaser.bsky.social
Es un cuento precioso, triste y emocionante. Redondo.

Proud of this #OpenAccess paper where we experimentally show that invasive Gambusia impacts a threatened cyprinodontiform fish through water quality degradation and competition. Led by @irene-gil-luna.bsky.social, Lluís Zamora and myself @greco-udg.bsky.social @iea-udg.bsky.social. #bioinvasions

There’s also a gambusia but he’s having a panic attack at the bottom of the bucket right now so I’ve turned off the lights before he pulls an OceanGate

Put up Martin houses and bat boxes. Stock Gambusia Affinis. But you probably know all that.

The gambusia have taken over our beaver ponds. I wonder what cool bugs and shrimpies I am missing out on because of that!

A 10 gallon aquarium holding native fish for the winter season. Mostly gambusia and a mummichog. They normally live in a 30 gallon mini pond when it's not freezing out.

Reminds me of the argument i had in the zoology lab at uni with someone who believed gambusia were "native guppies" and would not hear otherwise.

Mosquito fish (Gambusia affinis) were first introduced to California in 1922 for mosquito control. Instead of using insecticides to control mosquitoes, fish are an attractive and effective alternative. This method is ref to as biological control.

So the fish that I now have in my possession are two armored catfish, the two massive gouramis I have named Pete and Bas, a nerite snail, and a single gambusia that has a horrified look on its face all the time.

I don’t exactly recall working on this but I enjoyed rediscovering it.
