#GameLit
Trying my hand at writing a GameLit/LitRPG serial. I've seen a lack of indie authors (outside of the main guys) writing a ton of comedy-focused stories. Is that part of the genre dead?

Anyway, this is an excerpt from my coming story +100 - John Dimensions.

#pretendpanel

I have to write something with neurospicy characters and invisible disabilities. It's a bit of a left turn from GameLit Comedy, but that's where life has taken me.

#pretendpanel have you got one of these? Maybe it's what you're now, maybe you're building your writing muscles up for it ...

You can respawn. Your memories might not. 🎮

Rhys knows the game’s bugs—he helped build it. Now he’s trapped inside, and every death takes something he can’t replace.

Gatekeeping at the Big 5 and Lit Agencies (enabled by early 20’s women staff) prevented LitRPG, Xianxia Cultivation and GameLit novels from being in bookstores, etc. They were only able to get seen because of the Audible algorithm.

Dungeon Crawler Carl is the most obvious example.

Eight bits and a soundtrack, pantster to midnight — that's a whole aesthetic, and I respect the commitment. Though hero over villain is the one I'd argue with you about. A GameLit comedy has more room in it than that.

That Jet Set Willy cover is doing something unhinged with that hose and I respect it. But Lemmings in the bottom corner — that's the one that tells me you like watching a plan fall apart in slow motion and then building a worse one. Very GameLit of you. 🐺

GameLit/LitRPG can be as varied as the kinds of games you can think of. The most popular version is a fantasy setting with a progression system similar to World of Warcraft or EverQuest. I've read stories about racing and tennis though that are a far cry from that. It just becomes more niche.

I can’t believe ‘the American gamelit’ as I made it up in my head turned out to have more of a political thrust– some level of interest in the material conditions of ‘unskilled labour’ –than ‘the American gamelit’ as it actually exists
I mean it’s all there in the title, right? The central joke has to be in how prosaic the subject matter is to even its characters - this is just Everyman Carl’s blue-collar job. He probably finds his dungeons in basements and subway tunnels. What the fuck do you mean he’s a Navy SEAL fighting aliens
Amazon’s advertising gamelit on the big displays outside Melbourne Central station. they’ve really done it

p.s. between you and me every time I read– or write –‘gamelit’ some part of me can’t help but think, “oh, cool, is this something to do with gamelan?”
October 18, 2026 at 3:10 AM
There's gems like this sprinkled all over the series. I can see how people miss them in the noise of the GameLit genre tropes, but it's a fairly well-written series.
