The dinners made by multigenerational ryokan owners in Japan, especially the gassho-zukuri farmhouse in Shirakawa-go and the 200-year-old inn in Tsumago-juku where the owner caught a fresh carp for our meal.

We are staying overnight in the village in a traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouse. The dinner was made for everyone by the hostess and was incredibly delicious (The covered dish has more hida beef grilled in miso over its own flame)

As home to one of Japan’s traditional gasshou-zukuri villages made famous by Shirakawa-Go, Gero Onsen is both a great tourist attraction and a wonderful hot springs spot. The village has 10 thermal baths, as well as a number of foot baths located around town.

Takayama City is a popular tourist destination with traditional Japanese architecture and folk customs. This is a yatai float from the Takayama Festival and a gassho-zukuri house.

Ogimachi is the biggest village of Shirakawa-gō, an area belonging to the UNESCO world heritage, thanks to well preserved tradionnal gassho-zukuri farmhouses.
