When I planted a tiny gasteraloe in full sun, I thought it was a long shot. Two years later it's thriving and is fulfilling its reputation as a prolific producer of pups!

Here, I grew this triceratops houseplant for just such a possibility. 🌱🪴

I have a huge lizard tail (Gasteraloe beguinii) that spends the winter in the common room at my office. It pains me to do it, but it drips so much nectar on the lunch table that I always have to chop off all of its flowering stalks as long as it is living inside.🌱😩

I haven’t been collecting plants nearly as much since I can’t find a greenhouse that can handle the golfball sized hail we seem to get every few years… but the clearance section got me. Gasteraloe 'Kabela’, I believe. (Maybe Haworthia ‘Savanna’?) She’s gorgeous.💚

2/The name x Gasteraloe suggests it is a hybrid (the x- not really the letter x, another character) tells us it's a cross, Gasteraloe suggests between genera Gasteria and Aloe- which may or may not be accurate, or the whole story. #succulents 🌱

I found this page which also quotes Alsterworthia- there's also a passing comment on whether it should actually be synonymous with 'Silver Swirls' or "Savannah' -they have the h- which many others did not- as I said, so much poor quality info online! www.smgrowers.com/products/pla...

You can try cross breeding Aloe, Haworthia and Gasteria species who are all quite closely related. There are already several hybrids available, called Alworthia, Gasteraloe etc.

But Mesembs like Drosanthemum are a completely different plant family and will definitely not hybridize with those.

Taking a short break from snow pics, here are a couple of views of a little #succulent I got myself as a slightly belated 60th #birthday present! Seems it is likely x Gasteraloe 'Kebela' an intergeneric hybrid, though I haven't found any details on parentage. #winter #houseplants 🌱❄️#succulents

This little plant was in a ridiculously small pot. I decided to put it in a bigger one in June 2025. I was told that Google Lens ID'd it as Aloe variegata (or Gonialoe variegata). It is an Aloe, Gasteria or Gasteraloe (maybe a Gastworthia).

I had a look and Gasteraloe ‘Kabela’ is a cross between Gasteria ‘Perfection’ (aka ‘Perfectus’) and Aloe aristata, according to an Alsterworthia International special issue about hybrids etc. (The org is defunct but its publications are kept online by the Haworthia Society).
