A night time view from the Quayside, Newcastle upon Tyne, England looking towards the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, a pedestrian and cyclist bridge that spans the River Tyne in North East England, connecting Gateshead's Quays with the Quayside of Newcastle upon Tyne. Taken on a clear October evening with a dark cobalt coloured sky in the background. The large supporting arch above the bridge deck is illuminated in blue high powered lights. The colour of the lights change constantly. The blue arch is reflected in the slightly rippled surface of the river, as are the coloured LED lights on the bridge deck. The reflection of the curved arch has a squiggly shape to it caused by the ripples on the water. Victorian style street lights illuminate the Quayside with a slight lens flare at the top of them. On the opposite (Gateshead) side of the river is the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, a converted flour mill that now serves as a major international art venue. The street lights and tall buildings on this opposite side of the river also appear as multicoloured shimmering reflections on the river. The bridge has won numerous awards, including the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2002 for its innovative design. Completed in 2001 and opened in 2002, it is the world's first tilting bridge, nicknamed the "Winking Eye" for its unique design, which allows large ships to pass beneath by pivoting the entire structure on its foundations. The bridge features two steel arches, with the deck forming the pedestrian and cycle path and the larger supporting arch providing the tilting mechanism.

I live in a UK constituency (Gateshead) that used to be part of Labour's "red wall" but voted Leave in 2016, Tory in 2019 and Reform in the recent local elections.

During the US presidential election in 2024, almost every local I spoke to here about it loved Trump.

That all changed come Jan 2025.

While we were on the Quayside in Newcastle yesterday morning the Millennium Bridge went up.

Never seen it happen before, and it was amazing.

I have some video and I will have a quick watch of it first before I put it up as well later.

Gateshead are teetering on the precipice once again after yet another dramatic turn of events at the International Stadium.
