Before house numbers, Amsterdam buildings had distinct gavelstenen (gable stones) often related to the owner's identity. This 1618 building on Nieuwebrugsteeg was hat merchant Jan Reinarts'. The gavelsteen depicts a scene 'In de Ionghe Hoede Kramer' (In the Young Hood Merchant).

At Grote Oost, Hoorn, there are 3. The middle depicts 15thc couple Truydeman & wife Aleyde who gave bread to locals. Stories suggest they lived in a house on the same spot.
