It doesn't survive ASI's budget allocation.

Horse and Camel as Ecological Indicators: Climate Adaptation and Cultural Continuity in Northwest South Asia
The horse has been doing political work in South Asian historiography for over a century. Colonial scholarship made it a proxy for migration — specifically, for the arrival of Indo-Aryan populations from the northwest. That interpretive move was never as scientifically grounded as it appeared. It was a colonial inference dressed in archaeozoological language, and it has persisted long past the point where the evidence warrants it. This paper challenges that inference by introducing a comparative control that has been almost entirely absent from the debate: the camel. The camel is ecologically specialized for arid environments, completely absent from Mature Harappan faunal assemblages and iconography, marginal and ritually inert in the Rigveda, and appears in northwest South Asia only as aridity intensifies in the post-urban period. Its trajectory is textbook climate adaptation — and it requires no migration to explain it. When the horse is evaluated against this control, the migration

From Relational Identity to Administrative Fixity: The Structural Formation of Surnames in South Asia (India) (300 BCE–1950 CE)
This paper investigates whether modern surname practices in South Asia (India) represent a historical continuity from antiquity or a later structural transformation. It asks: did pre-modern South Asia (India) possess a surname system comparable to the modern one, and if not, how and when did such a system emerge? The study employs a structure-based methodological framework, defining a surname system through four criteria: positional stability, hereditary transmission, intergenerational repeatability, and administrative standardization. Evidence is drawn from three domains: epigraphic records (300 BCE–1300 CE), nineteenth-century administrative datasets, and institutional documentation, including census procedures and archival responses obtained through Right to Information (RTI) queries. Names are decomposed into constituent elements - patronymic, gotra, kula, toponym, and title - and evaluated against these criteria across temporal phases. The findings demonstrate that pre-modern iden

Rivers Beneath the Sand The Silence of the Indus and the Refusal of the Dead
Across the vast expanse of the Indus-Saraswati civilisation, one of the most persistent archaeological puzzles has been the scarcity of burials. Settlements stretching from Mehrgarh to Rakhigarhi supported populations in the millions over several centuries of urban florescence, yet the number of excavated graves remains in the mere hundreds. This numerical dissonance has typically been explained through preservation bias, limited excavation, or assumed cremation practices. Such explanations, while partially valid, fail to account for the magnitude of the gap.  This chapter advances a different thesis. It argues that the scarcity of burials is not an anomaly but a structural feature of a long-standing civilisational logic in the Indian subcontinent—one that systematically de-emphasises the preservation of the human body, including that of rulers. In contrast to civilisations such as Ancient Egypt, where the corpse becomes the primary archive of power and memory, the Indian tradition con

Colonial Botanical Engineering and the Ecological Transformation of Indian Landscapes
Urban landscapes across India today are often assumed to be natural extensions of local ecology. Yet many of the trees, shrubs, and plantation species that dominate these environments are the result of deliberate plant transfers during the colonial period. Between the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, British forestry departments, botanical gardens, and horticultural institutions introduced numerous non-native species into the subcontinent for economic, administrative, and aesthetic purposes. These introductions were linked to imperial priorities such as railway expansion, plantation agriculture, erosion control, and the landscaping of colonial cities. Over time, these plants became embedded in India’s forestry practices, urban planning systems, and municipal horticulture policies. This study argues that many contemporary ecological stresses in Indian urban and semi-arid environments are not purely modern phenomena but the long-term ecological consequences of colonial botanical
