#GenAI/SUM
Interesting case of fraud by making automated songs then automated accounts to stream them, pocketing $8M in revenue. Few/no real listeners were diverted to listen to the GenAI songs, but the funds he pocketed drank from a zero sum revenue pool that meant real musicians were paid less.

i really think genai causes actual brain damage. probably faster than most ways you can on purpose give yourself brain damage. and if you hear this statement as literally as i mean it i think it sounds sorta conspiracy nut, but undeniably less conspiracy nut than the apparent sum of its parts

When Musk said the "cumulative sum of human knowledge has been exhausted" for training AI, what he was really saying is that he would not pay for digitisation, and had reached the limits of useful data he could scrape for free. The GenAI house is built on sand.
Right, another key thing that historians do is working with important records that have not been digitized.

And the vast majority of the world’s records *have not been digitized* and thus do not exist in any format that LLMs/AI can work with.
it's literally impossible for an LLM to do a historian's job

it's not even LLMs sucking it's that they need data input to do anything and where's that data supposed to be coming from without historians

never met a computer that can dig through a thousand year old book in a library

To sum up, genAI:

- is power hungry
- costs society at large
- perpetuates biases
- has no ideas of its own
- cannot equal ordinary workers at their tasks
- shielded from criticism by media

They promised us robot workers and they built a robot c-suite guy

2 qualities routinely found in art:

- its often more than the sum of its parts
- as long as its honest enuff almost anythin goes

genai by its very nature cant ever fulfill either of these, fundamentally a tool of deceit

3. The good'ol "I have got to use genAI". Needs no explanation.

I don't really understand the process of turning something so real into a fake approximation of itself, stripping away all personality and individuality, while contributing to the total sum of slop content online.

That's all

"It’s like asking a pro pitcher to just let a machine pitch for them. Fuck off and give me the ball."

This might be the best way to sum up the argument about creatives not wanting anything to do with GenAI. TY, Austin.

To sum up:
- Bluesky is not using generative AI
- Bluesky IS using AI to enable moderation of content individual users choose to see
- Bluesky can discourage, but ultimately cannot physically stop others from using your content for genAI.

Why are people upset by this?

Can’t talk to USians in terms of rights, ethics, the environment, etc., only dollars; so let me sum up:

GenAI isn’t profitable. It is running on perpetual loss backed by venture capital and charging to make a profit would annihilate their customer base

Ya know... I thought of getting VRC+ again. But the fact the VRchat devs still have not said anything about the GenAI stuff... Nah. I will get sum Indie games instead with that money.

Had someone pop into my emails to offer a generous sum to do short term marketing consultancy at a genAI company on the condition that I delete any tweets and posts criticising AI, deeply funny stuff tbh (I said no, and if you’re reading this one, absolutely fuck genAI)

and like with the Mikkelson Twins, the fact that she's teaching classes on the scam makes it pretty clear that, if there was any money in it, it's either dwindling fast or entirely gone; "flood of GenAI slop on KU" is close enough to zero sum that more competition should be the last thing she'd want

Latest memo is on “genAI and digital trust,” and to sum up it’s guidelines on using AI they kinda translate to “don’t?”

“Never feed any information you do not exclusively yours into a public tool, and when doing so consider yourself to be submitting all ownership”

Sounds delightful!

GenAI art is a sum of all averages and you don't want to have something that looks plastic and soulless.

🧪 How many times and in what different ways do we need confirmation that genAI is crap for anything except the simplest tasks?
*Because it doesn't read, or comprehend, or think*.

(also, hilariously, it's the same AI Oxford Uni has just paid some huge sum to licence for all staff & students)

Second, theft of labour. This one's a two-parter. genAI steals both past labour and future labour. It is trained on the full sum of human accomplishment, without the permission of almost any of the humans involved in those accomplishments. Their art, their ideas, their styles, their thoughts. Stolen

What I don’t get with the restraints using genai images is for decades you can go to a place and they will never update the photos or the menus past using a pen and stickers to update over time. Why are so many suddenly changing the age old tradition of let it sum bleach for decades.

Some of y'all haven't fully finished your deconstruction from Christianity and it shows in how you interact with people when they make honest mistakes.

Like I fuckin DESPISE techbro bullshit like GenAI but the way that people are zero-sum about it morally kind of grates my gears.

Ugh, deleted one of my previous posts 'cause I don't want people to do the "So You Hate Pancakes" thing and misquote me.

I'll sum it up:
Don't support genAI. Point complete.
April 19, 2025 at 6:13 PM
I don't want to use genAI to sum up a story because I love to read
I don't want to use genAI to write for me because I love the act of writing. In fact I have two ideas I'm exploring and want to write

Zero sum public financing rhetoric will always help the far right.

“Spend tax dollars here instead of there” or even “GenAI isn’t even profitable” sets up a mechanism where every constituency and public institution has to justify its existence against a “taxpayer” who is external to it.
