Peter Mattis described DC to me brilliantly years ago as "a town run by generalists, because a generalist is actually a specialist in [the power structures of] DC itself." And one of the things the generalists do is get their impressions off specialists (not always a bad thing)

Will politely disagree, I would like a Senate of competitive and top-tier generalists.
It's not the main thing here, but I take issue with the idea that we should want "normal people" serving in the Senate at all. Only one hundred Americans get to be Senators. They should be brilliant subject matter experts. I don't want ordinary people making laws!

the "KFF data" is two series fom the BLS, as the tooltip at the bottom of the chart you posted indicates. i was able to quickly recreate the chart on FRED just now.
so yes, I do think it's a correct summary of the facts.

Unfortunately this situation produces a certain type of grifter - let's call them toxic generalists - who relies on this complexity to wheel and deal their way through systems.
The toxic generalist only needs to know a little more than nothing to pass as an expert. That's where AI comes in.

I find “people don’t actually know how things work” has a lot of explanatory power.
I don’t mean this in a holier-than-thou way. I’m only vaguely aware of how my microwave or the car radio work. A lot of modern life is assuming the functioning of complex tech and models.

I know you called out some academics but, much like the journos, they are often opining on areas outside their expertise and are de facto generalists. And, like with old Twitter, generalists despise running into people with actual, specific expertise and getting called out.
