🐦 Common songbirds are losing genetic variety

Old and modern genomes of 62 songbird species in China show genetic loss averaging 43 to 49%. Common species fared worst, so being everywhere is no proof a bird is safe.

Genomic erosion across avifauna in a biodiversity hotspot sounds a conservation alarm
Loss of biodiversity can have a hidden dimension—the cryptic erosion of genetic diversity even in the face of apparent species resilience. We quantified changes in genetic diversity by comparing histo...

Two years ago, countries at a UN biodiversity summit agreed that companies profiting from Earth’s genetic data should pay to help preserve nature. So far they’ve contributed just US$10,588.

Biotech firms are meant to pay to use Earth’s genetic data. They’re not.
Global leaders at COP17 biodiversity summit complained that companies using public genetic data are not paying into a voluntary fund to protect nature.

... two snake species interbred & produced a new "allopolyploid" species with unstable 'subgenomes'.

These 3 subgenomes competed with each other during meiosis, resulting in genetic instability.

The solution was to eliminate sexual reproduction altogether by silencing genes for sperm production.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Whenever Trump starts his rambling rant about IQ, genetics, and his uncle the MIT professor, someone in the room should point out that he's a closer genetic relative of Eric and Don Jr than he is of an uncle.
Don Jr.: "They want to pack the Supreme Court, make Ohio a state, make D.C. a state."

Often a major red flag is that these shifts in genetic diversity are claimed to be happening in the absence of any inbreeding or ROH, and the authors instead invoke genetic drift as the driving factor. But what seems to be under-appreciated is that genetic drift alone is a rather slow force
