Just finished Everything Will Swallow You by @dj-acid-reflux.bsky.social . Just a delightful read, full of hope and love and a way with words that constantly surprised me. I'd never have picked it up normally as it's not in my usual genres and I'm so glad I did!

There should be a genre of "genreless" games. A good genreless game is good because it has unique ideas that make it different from everything else. At the same time, it is a perfect realization of that idea, and/or that idea is difficult to replicate, so it does not start a genre.

1) Genreless engines do have their proponents, who appreciate their flexibility in that they can quickly (albeit roughly) be made to fit a premise.
2) Good mechanics and good premises are both fine, but a mechanic that has the right mouth feel for its attached premise is better.
